I never thought he would be fired but I don’t think he will be here, because he will get a new HC gig.

So who is playing the type of defense you would like to see us play? And is it based on the HC, Bama/Georgia, or is it based on the DC and can we pull them?

They linked then said his defense is horrible and he crashed and burned the Missouri program and he wouldn’t be a good hire for anybody.

quote:

CBS Sports' take: "Odom is ready to put himself out there three years removed from his firing at Missouri. Arkansas went to another level defensively went Sam Pittman hired him in December 2019. Odom shaved 85 yards per game off the Hogs average from 2020-21. He also brings head coaching experience having gone 25-25 at Missouri."

247Sports' take: This potential hire probably would not go down too well in Boulder. Arkansas' defense ranks 122nd nationally in yards per play this season and has taken a big step back, plus Odom arguably could have done better at Mizzou after Gary Pinkel had led the Tigers to back-to-back 11-win seasons not long before Odom took over.

It might not be a P5 job but I do believe he will be taking another job after this year. Unless he decides to do something he hasn’t done ever, and kill it in recruiting.

If we’re talking a realistic option, Randy Shannon maybe. Was on the staff with Pittman before

Don’t see him getting a different D1 job at this point. If that was his goal he should’ve struck while his stock was high.

I imagine he’ll get a head job at a lower tier school or become an nfl analyst as opposed to Pittman outright firing him.

Maybe since he is just a Codefensive coordinator at fsu.

I definitely can’t see that happening. Maybe Jerry will put him on staff at worst.

Sam seems to be going younger and younger with the hires, people who don’t have families so he can put them out recruiting like a mad man.

I’d look at David Reeves from UAB. I’ve only seen one game this year, but his defense got after it. He’s been up for the Broyles award a few times.

South Alabama’s DC is a secondary guy, and they play solid D as well. Forget his name. Brosett? Fosett? Something like that.

Derek Mason, but he did inherit Jim Knowles recruiting. Still though, OSU didn’t burn up the trail.

Ryan Walters - Illinois

Travis Williams - UCF

The bloom has gone off the rose for Odom this year. The offense has not played especially great but the defense has just been atrocious all season. Considering some of the teams still on the schedule there is a good chance we finish in the running for the worst pass defense in the country.

The good news is our pass defense is so bad teams probably won't beat us to death with the run like Alabama did.

Every national pod has been shite on Odom today..

One called out Slusher.
Another called out Haselwood for not making that touchdown for the gambling people and covering the spread.

Statistically here are some options at places we should be able to lure them away from:

Bryant Haines DC James Madison (2nd ranked defense in D1 at the moment.)
Joe Rossi DC Minnesota (top 10)
Phil Parker DC Iowa (top 10)
Chris Hampton DC Tulane (top 10)
Tony White DC Syracuse (12th)
Corey Batoon DC South Alabama (21st)

will be interesting to see how these finish up but ones to keep an eye on for sure.
Of course I'm always cool with Randy Shannon talk.

I think you'd have to at least kick the tires on Muschamp

I’d have to think Muschamp and Pittman’s personalities would be like water and oil. Might be a good thing, I don’t know. I know this: I want the DC on the sidelines where he should be. There’s absolutely no reason a GA can’t relay whatever the DC needs to know from up high.

I'd like to get a DC with more than one year of good results but that may not be realistic. I just look back to 2014 when we all thought Robb Smith was the GOAT DC and then we fell apart after that.

It's just hard because even Venables who most consider the best DC in the game has a horrific defense this year so you can't really tell if it was him being a good coach or the players he had at Clemson.

We need someone who can recruit and teach fundamentals. Surely they still make coaches like that?

Hopefully but outside of a year here and there I can't remember the last time our fans were happy with our DC. We can rotate coaches through all we want but the product has generally been pretty bad regardless.

People forget that OU sent him packing years ago. I have OU friends that were excited about his hire as the HC and I was like…y’all wanted him shite canned a while back when he was DC.

Bert's DC had the #1 defensive scoring efficiency through the first 4 weeks in all of FBS.

It would be poetic justice to steal him from Illinoism

That's the tough part though, guys like Scott Frost and Malzahn were at one point considered these great innovative offensive minds and some of the best OCs around but now they kinda suck. There are tons of examples of coaches being really good but then really bad and it's hard to figure out why. Odom is among those with his reputation when we hired him.

College football is hard to figure out sometimes.
