Let's talk Fortin

I don't know if he is the future or not, haven't seen enough of him. But it is interesting that once he got into the game all of a sudden he just starts chucking the ball around. When he starts throwing the ball we actually get to see our receivers play which for the most part, I can't think of 1 pass from KJ that hits a WR (maybe that's an exaggeration but you get the point).
It begs the question, are our WR's so bad that KJ doesn't trust them and doesn't throw it, or is KJ playing scared and only throwing it when they are wide open?

Or is KJ only good at the deep ball? And doesn’t trust himself reading a defense enough to throw in the middle, so he just runs it?

It did seem odd to me that our backup comes in and immediately starts throwing it around. You have to wonder if those kinds of plays are called for KJ, and they just degenerate into a run, or if Briles trusts Fortin to throw it more than KJ.
What is the story on him? Someone said earlier he’s a one year thing. Where did he come from and what year is he in?

Let's not make Fortin out like he's Joe Montana.
He's been to like 3 different schools at least, and most recently was with USF, where he couldn't win the job.
Now, does he have a good release and the look of a natural passer? Hell yeah.
But do I think he's the future of the program? No way.

Just looked it up. He’s a redshirt senior, so he couldn’t be the future if we wanted him to be. I just found it interesting that Briles didn’t seem to hesitate throwing it around with him. And he definitely throws a better ball than KJ.

Fortin was given passing plays because he’s a pass first QB

Little of column A and B. I think KJ was trying to stay in pocket and learn to read a defense during the Missouri State game, he can’t do it. Because he stayed in pocket twice as long as he normally does every play. Then ended up throwing it to nowhere half the time.

He threw a pretty ball. He’s more of a pure QB
KJ is more of a tight end running back hybrid that is decent at throwing. Probably a better athlete than Fortin.

Maybe it’s a Malzahn thing, but I absolutely loathe the looking to the sideline for a play after the defense lines up crap. I guess I’m just an old codger, but I can’t think of a single truly great quarterback that has come out of a system like that.

Doesn’t every QB in college do that until about senior year when they start getting trusted?
If you are talking about looking over at signs, that was more of a chip Kelly thing, I believe.

Briles style is keep running the same play over and over faster and faster until they stop it. Just changing directions left or right.

and this may be true. The one play with TE on Sat was a thing of beauty.

We have KJ Jefferson, and the damn backup QB is all some of you are talking about.
KJ is pretty damn good…The backup is always the most popular until he gets meaningful PT and everyone realizes why he is the backup QB.

This is a universal truth, and you are absolutely right. But part of the reason the backup struggles is simply the fact that they haven’t been out there doing the job. The good part of that is that very often just a little experience goes a long way with a guy that’s been around for years.

We’ll have to agree to disagree here. Whether he’s just not capable of making the throws, or Briles doesn’t have the confidence in him to call those kinds of plays, KJ is a big part of what makes us one dimensional. I love the guy, he has sacrificed his body and health time after time for this team. But there’s no reason to hero worship him. I have to think that he gives this team it’s best chance to win. But that doesn’t mean that given a little experience, Hornsby can’t do at least as well. QB mobility will not go down with Hornsby. We have to expect decision making, ball security, timing with receivers and even running backs will suffer some. But honestly, that’s where we’ve been with KJ for 2 years.

Or is it weird that we were playing from behind against probably a third string defense?
