Lost $1,100 on counterfeit (UT v. UF) tickets. Happy ending.

Being a graduate of both institutions and having a son soon to graduate from UT this game holds a special place in our house. Upon entering the stadium we learn that our tickets were counterfeit. The ticket taker was a really nice guy. I asked and he agreed that we could step just inside the stadium to discuss and process our situation. While my wife was confirming the counterfeit status of our tickets with ticketing officials I was building rapport with the ticket taker. I asked for permission to exit the stadium through a different gate to which the ticket taker agreed while winking, knowing my plan would be to go find standing room only.
We did just this with an awesome view of the field from the mezzanine level. The bathrooms were 50 ft to our left and the concession the same to our right. While standing next to another couple my wife shared our experience. The gentleman it seems is a facility manager with Neyland Stadium who gets free tickets to all the games including most other SEC stadiums. Guess who's going to the UT v. Alabama game and Florida v. Florida State for free. Beyond that we're going bass fishing next weekend.

Glad this worked out for you.
But do you mind sharing how the original ticket transaction materialized? Some folks--including myself--might need a "heads up."

I don't mind at all. We purchased the tickets near the main library which is very close to the stadium. The tickets are an awesome reproduction. It's estimated that 10,000 counterfeits were rejected for this game. The ticketing officials told us there's virtually no way for an inexperienced person to know the difference with few exceptions. This ticket could have been identified as counterfeit because on the back of it it did not tell you whether you were in a white or orange section to participate in the checkerboard effect. We were likewise told that even digital tickets are being counterfeited now. We saw several people rejected with counterfeit digital tickets just in the few minutes we were waiting inside the gate. The only suggestion they had is that the buyer should videotape the exchange and ask the scalpers name and to see their ID. If they hesitate don't buy.

glad it worked out for y'all. With that said, what a low life loser who would go to the trouble to do this.

Cool story if true. The guy winking is a bit much for me.

So moral of this story is, you could theoretically print your own fake tickets, claim you got swindled, and the stadium staff will still let you in?

Glad you got to take in the game. Sorry that someone tried to rip you off. Tickets were insanely priced early in the week so it was always going to a tempting target for scammers. I'm surprised that they flagged that many but with the new digital system people were definitely going to test it.

If this were paper tickets next time you make the seller go to the gate with you when you after getting in you pay him.

You have to request paper tickets now. We switched to digital tickets this year. It was only because some of us raised hell over it that paper tickets remained an option and even then you have to jump through some hoops.

I did some internet research today on the subject. Your suggestion was part of the article.

Sounds like something Billy Cannon might do if he was in his prime today.

How is this even possible? I could imagine a scammer could buy digital ticket then sell screenshots of the tickets to multiple people, but what kind of moron would accept a screenshot of a ticket instead of a digital link to a digital ticket from a reputable company like stubhub or the school ticket office? Lots of lessons being learned by lots of people right now.
Back to paper tickets, I have never ever bought paper tickets from a scalper. What you do (or did) is go through the tailgate areas with actual fans who might have an extra and walk around with your finger up.

Very seldom will you find people with an extra four tickets

I always sell a copy of my tickets when I attend games. I always make sure to get through the gate before the buyer does.
