This gets old. You can YouTube the play and see he's down, not once, but twice. First time by lower leg, then again after he rolls over the tackler by his non-throwing arm.
It was a shitty, shitty call. Why some people feel the need to explain it away just fascinates me. In the same way I'm fascinated by an irritating child.
If he was down as you said, then Alabama got screwed because it should have been a late hit/roughing the passer resulting in Alabama getting the ball 1st and 10 at the 18 yard line.

Looked like his calf touched the ground right before he let go of the ball.

Good Lord. This is getting tedious. Its like somebody that wants to debate the meaning of the word "is". Here's a link;

You can see, at the 1:00 mark, Young be down with his non-throwing arm before he slings the football with no idea of a target. It was a safety. Any non-biased viewer would call it a safety. It takes mounds of arguments and twisted logic to call it something different than a safety. Its the Tuck Rule on roids.
I looked at every frame in the 1:00 mark and don't see where he is down at any point in it.

I keep hearing "deflection" being used. Is that actually stated in the NCAA rulebook?
If so, I would tell my QB that if you are ever in our own endzone and you are being tackled just throw the ball at opposing team member and deflect it off of him to weasel out of a safety.
Easy. Since you are backed up in your own endzone, there will be tons of supposedly "eligible" receivers around so there is no way to tell

Not that it matters, but if the jersey colors were reversed, are you really yelling for a late-hit / roughing the passer flag here?

That is a complete and utter bullshite call.

Eta: I don't see how his foot would be at that angle if his lower leg wasn't touching the ground.
At the end of the day, though, I dgaf because I hate Texas and I'm glad they lost.

Exactly. These dumb shits are trying so hard to make it seem like it wasn't the right call, but even if it wasn't the right call, and he was down, then Bama would've benefited from a late hit PF call.

This gets old as well. Watch the play. If its that frigging debatable, what the meaning of "down" is ... how do you throw a flag for two players rushing in to clean up the play ? Come on. They didn't lead with a helmet. They didn't "lead" with anything. They came in and pretty much fell on Young, and not even with their full weight. If THAT'S roughing the passer, then you can't touch the passer.
And its not an if. Watch the video. Young was down, not once, but twice.
The refs botched it. 'Bama benefited from it. There is no need, absolutely none, for all this perverse bullshite to try and justify it. It was an egregious, awful officiating call. Pure and simple.

Latham should've got called for a false start and this circus wouldn't have even happened.

So you are now trying to argue that hitting a player after they are down on the ground is not a late hit? You are one special type of idiot.

The wording implies it, yes.

Yeah, that'd be a great way to turn the ball over...

I took your advice and did that and you are indeed correct. Down by lower leg and wrist. That hairsplitting shite cost LSU a 7 OT loss at aTm.
One of your other respondents claimed that if he was down then it is Bama ball 1st and 10 due to a late hit. I believe that ruling would be a dead ball personal foul and at worst UT penalized on the kick.

Are you sure about that? I’d rather give up a safety than have the other team take over inside your 40.
You see a safety, Alabama kickoff from the 20, Texas probably takes over around their own 40. If Texas has the same short 24 yard drive, they just punt the ball there.

He was not even "hit". Two players ran in, and neither attempted to initiate contact. It was a continuity thing, which happens on every damn play in college football.
You are not a "special type of idiot", however. You're just an argumentative, insecure fan who really feels the need to justify how a complete bullshite call that went in your teams favor was somehow "right". It wasn't right. It was an awful, awful call. These things happen. To pretend that it was anything else is just pure fantasy.

I don't need to go to Youtube. I could see that he was down the instant he was tackled. It takes a vivid imagination to reach another conclusion.

Post something, anything, that serves as evidence of a late hit there.
