Damn.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Twins pitching coach Wes Johnson has informed the club he will leave his job this week, reportedly for the same role at LSU.

Johnson traveled with the team on Sunday night to Cleveland, where he will stay on for the five-game series that's scheduled through Thursday, Twins spokesman Dustin Morse said.
According to a report by D1Baseball.com on Twitter, Johnson has accepted the pitching coach position at LSU. The Twins did not confirm Johnson's destination. Further announcements from the club surrounding the staff change will come this week.

The midseason move by a key assistant from a first-place team was startling, but Johnson's arrival in 2019 was also unusual. He was widely believed to be the first college pitching coach to jump directly to the major leagues when the Twins hired him from Arkansas.

Johnson presided over pitching staffs for division champion teams in his first two years, and the Twins have returned to the top of the AL Central this season. They lead the Guardians by two games entering their series this week. Minnesota has a 3.78 team ERA, which ranks 11th in the majors.

His Twins salary: 350K
His LSU salary: 750K

And that's why he left abruptly while MN was on a flight.

He went from 240K to 300K with the extension last year.

The amount of melt over a dude that spent one season at State and one at Arkansas is incredible.

Guess Hobbs had nothing to do with Isiah Cambpell, Kevin Kopps, Wicklander, Connor Noland and a myriad of other really solid relievers in the last 4 years.

Do people forget Kopps had an effing .90 ERA and won the golden spikes? Over 2 other historically good pitchers in Leiter and Rocker? Hobbs gets no credit for that?

Pitching hasn't been our problem.

Just heard DvH and Hobbs apparently got into it and now Hobbs is looking for a job. Anyone else heard that?

So the hitting coach, did he play peacemaker?

I think he just cried looking at Casey Martin, Robert Moore, Brady Slavens and Gregory's "progression" under his tuteledge.

Hell, even Wallace's approach at the end, minus the Auburn game was frustrating as hell.

I hope Moore wasn't a flash in the pan 1 year hitter too. He's a way better prospect.

Poor Casey is so so bad in the minors I don't know how he's still on a team.

Do you think Nate Thompson is responsible for Casey Martin's struggles in the minors?

One good pitcher doesn't mean anything when the rest of the staff is so bad you have to ride that one arm more than you ever should.

Yes, pitching has been our problem. If pitching wasn't our problem, Kopps wouldn't have had to be a starter, reliever, and closer all at once. People also like to leave out that Kopps was on like his 5th year of development and our staff got more time with him than would normally be possible thanks to Covid. Offense has carried this team since Blaine Knight and Campbell left. One bad offensive year doesn't negate that.

Bottom line is I wouldn't lose any sleep if either Thompson or Hobbs left. I hate the offensive approach we've adopted under Thompson and Hobbs has way more misses than he has hits.

3 out of 4 years he’s been here we’ve been top 3 in the league in team pitching.

Bats were solid in 18 and 19 but our average was bottom half of the league last year. 109 HRs was a lot but not relative to this year.

Bats lost game 3 in 2018, 2021 and this year.

Pitching decisions might be questionable but the pitching talent and development has been there.

Bats sent Arkansas packing 0-2 in the 2019 CWS. It is a pattern and it is very annoying. Hopefully DVH had a talk with Thompson about a different approach at the plate.

Arm talent yes… Arkansas is going to attract baseball talent in all facets.

Development not even close.
Smith was a pitcher before he showed up at Arkansas. McEntire was a pitcher. Locates and has a starter makeup.

Wiggins is an exceptional thrower who with some development might turn into a pitcher someday. 2 years with the best training facilities in baseball and still hasn’t developed a reliable secondary.

Trest was great thrower talent never developed. The list like this is long.
Hobbs is recruiting arm velocity and hoping some figure out how to locate along the way.

When guys like Ramage and Zeb are the mainstays in your middle relief it’s pretty telling. We rode them like mules in early conference play.

Where did we rank in walks allowed?

Let's go back to 2018 when all we had left was Cronin.

Pitching is just one of the issues with Arkansas Baseball.

Isiah Campbell suddenly became a pitcher? Noland this year? Tygert for most of the year?

"Cronin was all we had left"

You're telling me we were low on pitching arms in Game 2 of the CWS championship series? You don't say.

If the expectation is to have Kevin Abel and DeLucia every year, ya'll are going to be disappointed for a really long time.
