Will this lead to a type of salary cap?

That's the only way to try and control this. Maybe ultimately a revenue sharing pot so that all of the big conferences can pay the same amount to level the playing field.

That’s exactly what poor people and cheaters (folk willing to spend dark money over the salary cap) want.

The genie is out of the bottle but something has to change.
Of course, as soon as they implement a salary cap/new rule, the schools and donors will be getting with their lawyers for ways around it.

Don’t I know it. The government screws everything up and the only regulation that comes will have to be at their level

This is what Saban wants so it isn’t an advantage against him.
But it still doesn’t change NIL. You can’t tell a player they can’t go get sponsorship money now.

How do you put a salary cap on money given to a player from an outside organization??

Not sure. Let the lawyers and schools figure it out

Yes. But to do that you have to have player contracts. To do that, the NCAA cannot be a not for profit entity (I am reading between the lines here in the SCOTUS opinions).
So yes. I see that eventually happening but not before we have a new league that is taxed by the government.
This whole thing is because the NCAA is avoiding litigation that would eventually make them lose non profit status.
So crated a for profit league. Have salary caps. Have free agency and player contracts.
That’s indeed where this is headed.

You can if they sign a player contract.

No
Next question
The entire image and likeness etc allows it to stay a free market. Like pro players making money from endorcements. The schools are not directly paying recruits.

With a contract the player signs when he comes into the league.
It’s coming. And the NCAA is avoiding it because it means the end of them.

Or the NBA, MLB, or NFL…you’ve gotta have some rules no matter the $ amount or you don’t have a sport. You can’t totally disregard the rules of chess, and still be playing chess.

The answer is, you cant. If they try, they’ll get sued again.

quote:How? This all got started because the courts have already said that the NCAA cannot regulate a kid's ability to get paid for his NIL. How would such a "cap" be governed or enforced?

Then the well known rule breakers will just spend outside of the salary cap just like it was done before

I don’t believe there is a long standing market for semi-pro football or a second Pro league. There are substantially more teams who can’t play the NFL salary tier game than those who can. Alabama, OSU, and Oklahoma are a product of their rivalries and competition. Georgia isn’t Georgia without the ability to play and beat or lose to Auburn, Florida, GT, UT, Clemson, SC….and other regional competition. Football requires an opponent to generate interest. There is a lot more interest in a game comprised of our kids from our state, from our hometown, than a poorly executed semi-pro game. And the willingness to allocate limited entertainment resources will wane inevitably in time if you over play your hands. Why follow college football at all if it’s no longer our kids from our state, at least predominantly.
The NFL rightly realized something similar to this and instituted a salary cap. If Cleveland can’t field a competitive team then Cleveland in the long game won’t have interest and Cleveland won’t play and then the Giants eventually have nobody to play. The NFL’s popularity stems from competition. TAMU’s coffers have increased as a product of interest in their competition….same for every other SEC team.
College Basketball has far less of a local feel than college football, it’s further down the road to being openly a farm system for the NBA and they have hemorrhaged revenue and eyeballs in the last 30 years
