Question for the old time LSU fans

I’m watching the Elway to Marino 30 for 30 and a lifelong Dolphin fan. Marino obviously is my favorite QB of all time and loved watching him throw it to the Marks brothers.
I remember Mark Duper went to Northwestern State in Louisiana. Do y’all remember why he didn’t go to LSU? He was a track guy, so had D1 speed. Was it due to his size or academics? Or just one of those recruiting stories where a kid slips through the cracks?

I met him after retirement. I knew he wasn’t big but was surprised how short he was. But, damn, he and Clayton were so good with Dan.

A bit before my time but usually guys like that in that era didn’t qualify or had some kind discipline problem. And of course some just plain fell through the cracks.

Sofla, this bit is a big deal for LSU.
There is a lot of talent in Louisiana. Usually you can count on elite defensive linemen, wide receivers, defensive backs, and some solid running backs year in, year out. I'm not sure why it always seems to work out like that, but that's just what this state produces. Then you've got a year like this coming class where you have 3 QB's that are near the top in their class, and it looks like LSU will miss out on all of them.
The whole "build a wall around Louisiana" is just a joke. Ed Orgeron did a great job of bringing every 5 star here, but we will never get every elite player at a given position in every class. The successful LSU coach will be able to pick up the guys in state that he needs and fill the roster with out-of-staters. Les Miles gave up on that in his last few years, and it cost him his job.

I do not know the real answer. I think Mark would have been in the '78 class out of HS. No doubt we whiffed.
That said, we had a pretty good receiver corps in Carlos Carson, Tracy Porter, Lionel Wallis, and Orlando McDaniel.
Some potential reasons (not saying any of these were 'it'):
- Grades
- Height (he wasn't tall)
- Maybe he improved a lot after HS.
- Something as petty as our recruiter for his area didn't like his HS coach

I was at NLU about the same time Duper was at Northwestern. I don't know the whole story. However, I think Duper was more of a track guy to begin with even at Northwestern.
They had some really talented guys through there at that time. I believe they won the NCAA 400M Relay one year. I think that relay had Duper, Joe Delaney, a rookie of the year RB with the Chiefs before he drowned (from Haughton), a guy named Victor Oatis (Winnsboro) who also played a little NFL wide receiver (Vikings as I recall), and I believe a kid from Airline in Bossier City. It has been a long time, but I think I have my facts straight.

Carlos Carson was from John I Leonard High School here in Palm Beach County.
One of the cool things about Duper was he was still rocking the old style face mask into the 90s.

You do indeed. The team they beat that night in BR that night (1981 in BR) was Georgia who's relay team included Herschel Walker and superstar world class sprinter/NFL receiver Mel Lattany.
