They sound good, but I don't know exactly how they'll impact Auburn sports, hopefully they stick more to what's in their district's best interest, in their lane. I read that board members can only serve 2-7 year terms, Jimmy Rane was confirmed in 2012 for his first term, thus renewed in 2019 so he has 4 more years left, which could be good or bad depending on how NIL and transfer portal changes occur.

I'm actually hoping what Saban warned this week about NIL/Transfer lights a fire under the commission. Ultimately I think Saban could be the best commisioner if it came down to that, he seems to be really good at forecasting how changes to the sport will effect long term trends.

Smith is really, really well known. I knew his son. I know we have guys on this board from their area that could probably tell you more.

He's a good guy. Have no idea how he will be in this capacity, but he is a smart dude for sure.

He really does seem like a good catch, from what I've read elsewhere

That's mind blowing. I remember Jimmy seeming to have his fingers in the pie as far back as the early CTT days. I was sure he was on the board when the accreditation stuff happened in the early 2000s.

Did Rane do something to cause us to have to pay CTT’s buyout? Like contact Nutt before CTT was fired?

This is not good for the university imo. People like this tend to want their opinion TK be taken as valid and used their money/power as influence.

Saban hates NIL because it allows everyone to do what he and Kirby, and very few others, are already allowed to do.

Exactly. He didn’t randomly land a #1 class at Alabama in 2008 because of his personality. He got their boosters in line to go after the top talent and pay more than whatever Auburn was offering. They landed ALL of the top in-state players even though we’d beaten them 6 in a row and they’d been irrelevant for a decade. Auburn, LSU, Florida, and Georgia were the top dogs in the SEC at the time.

I don’t think so. He wasn’t on the BoT until 2012. Maybe behind closed doors he had something to do with Tubs but I’ve never heard anyone say he did. If I remember right they negotiated his buyout. This was way before the days of paying $25 million to go away

The story/rumor I always heard was that Jimmy reached out to Nutt directly because he knew him (and so many of the SEC coaches) from the Yellawood commercials. Nutt said something to his agent, who was also CTT's agent, and things went from there.

I also remember being at Tiger Walk one time during the Tubs era, and someone was saying they had been at a golf tournament that Yellawood sponsored, and a lot of the coaches were there playing (again because of he commercials) and Jimmy approached CTT about his interest in the AU job.

Two different stories, several years apart, both implying that Jimmy used his connections to try to feel out interest in the Auburn football coaching position. This is also the man who was reported to have told the Huntsville AU club that there isn't a single AU coach hired or fired without his personal approval.

Courtney Upshaw was as close to an Auburn lock as it gets until he visited Saban the first time. I remember it was a bit of a shock when he committed. He had been to at least 10 Auburn games in the last 2 years and was a regular during spring. I don't know anything personally but people who generally don't spew the we was cheated line were openly questioning what was going on

That's what I always heard. And that Sexton went straight to Auburn and asked for the buyout and Tuberville did resign. I don't think he'd have been fired if Nutt didn't take the bait.
