Game day eye-test seemed to always tell me he was the fastest or second fastest guy on the field. I was expecting closer to 4.4.

Well, fortunately for Burks and his legions of fans, the pride of Warren, Arkansas, came to Indianapolis, saw the rest of the competition, and kept his first-round dreams alive. Despite being the heaviest wide receiver at the combine at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, Burks ran a 4.55 40, which isn’t, like D.K. Metcalf-level speed but could have been much worse and ranked first in arm length at 33.5 and third in overall wingspan at 79.125.

He’s a physical receiver with great hands. Doesn’t need to be the fastest guy on the field to have success.

I read a different article that said his second run was a 4.5....

2nd run was 4.50 which is fine. Probably be 4.4’ish at Arkansas pro day.

The 40 time isn’t that big of a deal imo. Jarvis Landry had a pretty bad combine and still went 12th overall and has been consistent in the league. Kupp didn’t test well either and he’s one of if not the best receiver in the league. Burks is a large man with great hands, that’s what he’s got that you can’t teach. It was a little worrisome that he had a poor vertical jump but that never seemed to stop him in sec play. Probably because he has a knack for high pointing the football.

Reminds me of Joe Adams running a mediocre 40
Combine speeds and on the field speed are related but not equivalent

None of our guys put up overly impressive numbers. Actually gives me more faith in the coaching staff winning as many games as we did without elite athletes.
With that said, Burks was also the heaviest WR and I imagine close to the strongest if he had done the bench press. Probably a reason his speed translates well to the field in pads.

Burks is a better athlete than Adams. Burks could gain 20 pounds and still run the same 40. He was fast enough to outrun those Bama DBs.
These are still fast 40s when you compare them to the average man.

40 time without pads on doesn't mean shite
plus some kids who love pizza eat a ton of pizza after their last college game, waiting for the draft
any dipshits who feel like not drafting Treylon Burks after seeing him on film, seeing him blow past the entire Alabama secondary right up the middle of the field, can hang their dipshit awards on the wall

Football speed and track speed are often not the same thing as you pointed out. I am no expert on how fast a human being can run, but I do know that I saw Burks run away from elite college DBs who are probably going to be playing in the NFL.
His size, weight, strength, hands, and catching ability are off the charts for a WR. Honestly, you could put him as a possession WR to move the chains, you can use him as a homerun threat, hell... he throws a pretty darn good block.

Ronnie Lott probably ran a 4.65 and he's the one who said Jerry Rice probably ran a 4.7

And they combined to catch something like "oh my Jesus" number of yards. I think the NFL gets wrapped up into 40 times and other statistics and fails to focus on who can play. How many physical freaks of nature (including poor Matt Jones) have we seen fizzle out in the NFL?

dude, some guys run a 4.49 on the first try and then 20 minutes later they run a 4.33
then some guys run a 4.50 and feel a tweak to the hammy and call it a day, and then the sportswriters, who all run a 9.4 in the 40, and never played past 6th grade, act like they found something
