For a change of pace today and for the "Something I never expected to see" file, Auburn Rodeo received an Academy of Country Music award nomination for Fair/Rodeo of the Year.

Other nominees are:
California Mid-State Fair, Paso Robles, CA
Cheyenne Frontier Days, Cheyenne, WY
Minnesota State Fair, St. Paul, MN
San Antonio Rodeo, San Antonio, TX

Meanwhile the only thing I’ve heard about it since I last went is it went down the tubes…

But I guess you’re probably not getting an award for an all out shitshow like it was in the good ole days

Yeah, I remember driving through a field of cow patties to park and walking to a set of old wooden bleachers to watch fratboys get tossed off bulls.

Apparently now it is a high dollar production with big name music acts that come in at night.

OG rodeo will never be rivaled. What a fantastic shitshow. The car lines stretching down south college tailgating in truck beds was so much fun. It is a shell of its former self now.

It was a blast. Just drag a keg out in the field, drink and party all day long while watching a poor skinny bull try to throw some 400 lb AG guy.

Post-rodeo 2012 I had borderline alcohol poisoning. I’d do it again in a heartbeat

I figured with how crazy it had gotten they’d eventually have to make some changes. Some of my best memories. Where is it held now?

I think it moved around some from back in the day. Now it looks like it is held down off US-80 south of Beauregard - between Marvyn and Little Texas - almost a straight line due south of Chewacla.

How can a frat house goat riding contest, rival the last full week of July in Cheyenne?

It can't. As mentioned by someone above, Auburn Rodeo seems out of place with any of the other 4 nominees. But they do apparently pull talent for the concert and draw a crowd.

But Cheyenne is on another level. I've been once, and I'll sell my house to go back the next time George Strait is one of the music acts for Frontier Nights. I've see him multiple times live, but him in Cheyenne is a bucket list item.

I lived there. You don't go to the Rodeo until the last two days .... after the future Rodeo stars have been eliminated.

I went to the Calgary Stampede. Because my Rep had tickets for me ....after she learned that I really enjoyed Frontier Days. To show you how long ago that was ....Roy Rogers Sons of the Pioneers group was still playing as one of the feature bands.

Back in the day, it was Sons of the Pioneers and Hank Williams Jr.

While there my Dad was called to investigate a Thunderbird's Plane Crash. The promotions Officer flies in three days before the team comes in. We were in a massive thunderstorm, the passenger plane that landed before he came in hydroplaned and barely got stopped. The tower decided to bring the fighter in ...He hydroplaned, went to afterburners to get back up, hit the trees at the end of the runway, sheared off the wings and spun down the driveway between all the rodeo RV's without hitting anything. They both ejected, the pilot was fired straight into the ground and his second seat into a hot dog stand. Papers called the pilot a hero ....after losing the wings, he was nothing but a unguided missile.

Don't have to say the widows ...almost owned the airport and the City for a long time.
