If it works, it works. I don’t care how he does it. But do you realize how insanely good you’d have to be to find enough diamonds in the rough to compete with Bama/UGAs recruiting? Not a great strategy to use.

I'm pretty sure that there was an analysis out there that found that Bama/UGA actually did even BETTER than most at evaluating "3-stars". So not only do they sign 5-stars, but when they pick a 3-star to be in their class, they're actually very good at evaluating those players too.

This obviously makes sense as these are elite staffs with elite coaches who also happen to be elite talent evaluators. It's very silly to assume that these schools just randomly pick recruits based off of star rating, while Harsin is going to "do his own evaluation". As if Saban/Kirby and company aren't doing their own evaluations as well.

For example, that white WR from UGA that destroyed us last season was a LOW 3-star. He still somehow made it into UGA's recruiting class in 2020 despite the fact that he was ranked as the #169 WR in the 247 Composite. I'm pretty sure that Vandy was his only other SEC offer. So in that case UGA clearly identified him properly, to the degree that pretty much no one else in the SEC did.

There are so many factors that go into that though. Bama for instance, they generally don't need 3* guys, so the ones they do bring in are going to be those athletes that have all the tools to be a great player, but are either very raw or not fully developed. Then they get 2-3 years normally to develop, competing against that level of talent.

That makes it look like they are evaluating them better, but in reality they are just able to let those kids develop instead of having to use them when they aren't as ready.

Doesn't mean they don't evaluate them better than anyone, but that is going to skew the results a bit IMO.

He averaged 2 catches and less than 30 yards a game. It's not like he's some world beater.

Kinda my point.

Not only do you have to evaluate at an elite level. But you also have to be on guys that are also being missed by Bama/UGA. Otherwise they’re just going to recruit them away from you if you aren’t a good recruiter.

This is the truth and it’s bothered me for years. Obviously Saban has pulled a ton of elite prospects for YEARS now, and they’ve won multiple NCs and Heisman trophy’s because of it, but I swear they’ve had more PRODUCTIVE 3* guys come through than all other SEC schools combined. When they identify a 3* guy, chances are pretty good that we’d kill to have him. Saban identifies talent so well that the recruiting services had to literally change their formulas to keep up. Don’t know as much about UGAs roster but I’m sure you’re correct there too.
