“They have the best resume in the country,” Newell said. “Nobody should be denying that, and I absolutely believe that they have the best resume in the country…. but right now, there are probably eight teams in the country that, on a neutral court, they would not be favored against. So, that’s how I do my poll. It doesn’t change. It stays the same week to week. That’s sort of the process as I go through it. As I said, I’m consistent with it.”

Eh, I don’t hate him as much as you guys do. Good for him for standing alone and being consistent. Honestly, if I were betting $1,000 on Auburn against teams on a neutral court, there would probably be a few teams I would also believe that would probably beat Auburn.

Except he isn’t consistent with it and apparently doesn’t understand what the predictive polls measure and what the AP poll is supposed to measure.

I don’t believe there are 8. Maybe 4-5? Not 8.
He’s narrow minded.
But give him credit for putting it out there.

Again, those are both predictive models. They're not result-oriented. So, in my opinion, they should not be the end-all and be-all reference points because, for the millionth time, the results of the games should matter. But, for the sake of the argument, let's rely on them momentarily. If Jesse swears by KenPom and Torvik, why does he have Kentucky -- which, again, is coming off of a loss to Auburn -- ranked 25th on his ballot even though UK is 35th at KenPom and 35th at Torvik? Neither number is close to the top 25. So when did Jesse decide to stop trusting computers? And did you realize Saint Mary's is 10 spots higher than Kentucky at KenPom, and five spots higher than Kentucky in Torvik, but still unranked on Jesse's ballot?

He probably thinks Gonzaga would be favored despite bama handling them on a neutral court then us beating Bama on their own court

I don’t really care if he’s consistent, he’s wrong to put us 9th. Put us 3rd or 4th? Maybe, but 9th is laughable

This guy is a hack. He thinks Houston (who lost two of their best players) would beat Auburn on a neutral court. His reasoning is ridiculous.

If he’s not consistent with it then fine.

But I don’t see why people are all of the sudden upset about predictive models. Isn’t that what everyone loves about football? Everyone loves saying who “the best 4 teams” are for the CFP even though that’s all based on subjectivity and not even based on an analytical model.

Personally, I hate having meaningful polls based on what people think would happen on a neutral field. I’d much rather go with resume of what you’ve done on the field. What I think about your team should have no bearing on who gets to play for a championship.

I just don’t like people switching back and forth when it benefits them. Pick a method you’re in favor of and stick with it.

Also the AP doesn’t give guidelines for how to rank teams.

Predictive models don’t bother me. They have their place. Replacing AP/coaches polls or even seeding tournaments isn’t that place.

Predictive polls are far from perfect. They are A source of info, not the only source. That’s my problem with the guy that voted Auburn 9th.

quote:

AP Voting Guidelines As posted by Jon Wilner here. Some voting guidelines: Base your vote on performance, not reputation or preseason speculation. Avoid regional bias, for or against. Your local team does not deserve any special handling when it comes to your ballot. Pay attention to head-to-head results and Don’t hesitate to make significant changes in your ballot from week to week. There’s no rule against jumping the 16th-ranked team over the eighth-ranked team, if No. 16 is coming off a big victory and No. 8 just lost 52-6 to a so-so team. Teams on NCAA probation ARE eligible for the AP poll. Some ethics guidelines: Voters should have no professional or booster connection to the schools they cover. This could pose a conflict of interest. Voters cannot write for team media guides or even independent fan magazines associated with certain schools. This has the potential of compromising a reporter’s objectivity. Adhere to APME and APSE standards of conduct: We do not accept free tickets, deals, discounts or gifts, etc. Please be advised: “Homerism” will be challenged and could lead to dismissal from the poll board. How voters are selected (as of August 2016): Four 'national' voters are selected by the AP Local sports writers and editors select one voter for every three FBS teams in each state Discretion has been used in the past to adjust the number of voters

I just read something where a voter said they don’t get guidelines so I guess they don’t do a great job of communicating it

That’s as general as it gets and I don’t really see how you can even challenge how using the model doesn’t fit that guideline.

AP poll and coaches poll are already meaningless. And this is just one voter. The models are actually used in seeding.

Idk. I just don’t see why people are pissed besides the fact that they didn’t get the result they wanted out of it.

BULL.frickING.shite.

So here's his top 8, I'm assuming he thinks all these teams would be favored over Auburn on a neutral court

1. Gonzaga
2. Baylor
3. Villanova
4. Houston
5. Arizona
6. Purdue
7. Kentucky
8. Kansas

We'd definitely be favored of Houston. We'd be favored over Baylor right now after they dropped 2 straight at home. I think we'd be favored over Villanova. Auburn would damn sure be favored over Kansas right now, him and Jrvdmac from tRant are the only two homers dumb enough to think otherwise. Auburn might be the only team who matches up well enough to possibly be favored over Gonzaga.

We'll see about Kentucky soon enough. After what they did last week it's possible they'd be a narrow favorite ok a neutral court. Purdue and Arizona I could also see being favored, but those could go either way.

I’m not pissed. I’ve had fun watching Auburn Twitter mob today. I just think it’s a guy trying to be the smartest guy in the room without really understanding the difference in predictive models and polls. A team with the best resume this far into the season with a top 20 offense and defense by all the metrics he claims he studies, isn’t a 9th ranked team. Ignoring the weak arse schedules played by Gonzaga, Arizona, and even Duke is confusing too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if those weak schedules hurt those teams come March.

There is not a team in the country I’d bet against us. Not one.

Couldn't his reasoning result in a situation where a team that wins the national championship game ends up ranked behind the team it beat in the national championship game?

Preach. I'd love a #1 for historical purposes but I'll prefer to see it proven on the Court in April

The test for these voters should be "How many times have you actually vegged out and watched them in a game?"

It should be simple…. Polls should be based on what has happened… metrics like Kenpom are trying to predict potential future matchups. Mixing the two is silly.
