Michigan installs 'Beat Georgia' practice — "You have to get through the SEC to win"

Michigan football is coming off a two-year run as kings of the Big Ten with back-to-back trips to the College Football Playoff. The first of those trips ended in a blowout loss to Georgia as the Bulldogs embarked on their first of two back-to-back national titles.

A season ago, the Wolverines suffered another Playoff loss at the hands of TCU. Now, with their sights set on a return trip in 2023, Michigan has reportedly added a new segment to their practice sessions.

According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, Jim Harbaugh’s program has added a “Beat Georgia” portion to practices to focus on the top dogs in the country. It is supposedly similar to the “Beat Ohio” segment installed in years past.

You have to get through the SEC to win the national title right? Their archrival — who they whipped at their own place — was like this close to winning that game and knocking the Bulldogs out of the mix,” said Feldman on the Move the Sticks Podcast. “One thing I heard a couple of years ago, one of the things that helped flip the switch at Michigan is they started to embrace the going after Ohio State year-round and they installed this ‘Beat Ohio’ period to practices… All of a sudden, now, I heard they have a ‘Beat Georgia’ period too.”

Even if the Wolverines are that fired up for a rematch with the two-time champs, Michigan will need to address the defensive issues that led to giving up 51 points in a CFP loss to TCU.

Maybe they should start with a "Beat TCU" practice and go from there

Maybe they should worry about beating the Big 12 runner up first?

I wonder if this works out like Harbaugh’s satellite camps in Alabama to “recruit like the SEC”.

isn't looking ahead to UGA what got them beat last year in the first place?

Did anyone in their right mind actually believe that Michigan would put up a good fight against UGA? I certainly didn’t.

Michigan and OSU are overrated programs who coast in due to weak schedules. Suck it Jim.

January, 2016

Jim Harbaugh is planning a slumber party at the house of the nation's top kicker recruit.

Wait, what?

Quinn Nordin is the prospect in question. He is the top kicker recruit in the country.

"He said we can watch a movie, see how well we gel and he said he would sleep over after that," Nordin told Scout.com. "I was in tears laughing when he said that. He said the next day, if my parents didn’t want me to miss school, he would go to every class with me and go to lunch with me. I was laughing so hard."

Harbaugh's staff has made a habit of finding loopholes in recruiting rules like holding recruiting "satellite" camps throughout the South and guest coaching at other schools in talented regions.

Michigan and OSU are overrated programs

OSU was a missed 48 yard FG from beating UGA last year.

UGA outscored them 18-3 in the 4th quarter and even one of their assistant coaches said UGA 'out-conditioned' them in the second half. That's what championship teams do. I won't go so far as to say they are both overrated, but they are certainly overmatched when they have faced SEC teams. We trashed Michigan. Then mopped the floor with TCU who hung 50+ on the same Michigan team that prison-raped Ohio St...2 years straight.
I think anyone would agree with that Bama and UGA are a step above the Big 10 elite. LSU, UT and Texas A&M?...eh, we'll see after this year.

Tennessee would have track ran around and over Michigan with Hooker at QB last year. Ohio State would have been a lot tougher matchup for us.

At what point do we just send the other conferences to D2

I agree with this, but still believe in the age-old adage that it's mostly about matchups.

Also, in this era of increase offensive production, unique schemes and concepts take advantage of those mismatches, especially when they're not practiced against regularly.

In other words, coaching has gotten more advanced and extremely efficient at identifying and exploiting weakness.

Personally, I think it's effectively happening right now.

Once this whole super-conference thing is completed, there will be a few traditional programs on the outside looking in, IMO.
