I hope we break the bank on an OC and he stays the hell out of the offense completely. Him being a defensive guy that has no prior contact with Gus Malzahn are the only things I like about it.

Will be interested in seeing his staff, current player retention, and finishing out the recruiting class. Obviously those are big for any coach, but I feel like I know less about him than most past hires

Sounds like a Pat Dye style interview.

Needs to be Sumrall. Natural leader, engaging, intense, no BS. Has shown he can build a roster quickly so risk of losing guys if DJ leaves is minimal. Give him AU resources and he will do well. Very much the anti-Freeze, and it’s clear he wants the job. Hope we don’t over think this.

Glad to see it.

20% of his coaching career in southeast Alabama with the crew (and the rest basically at Tulane, Kentucky, San Diego) - no, definitely not, no one overthought this.

Suckage since 2018.

If this is the case, Auburn deserved a better search.

What if AU opened the checkbook to a Dan Lanning and said name your price? How would you feel?

I’d rather have Dan Lanning, a sure thing, than Sumrall, if that’s what you are asking.

Everyone would rather have Lanning, but he isn't leaving Oregon for anyone. I would also rather have Dilly or Lashlee, but neither of them seem to want to leave.

So if it is down to Drink or Sumrall, give me Sumrall all day. We know what we would get with Drink - he would beat everyone he should beat, but lose routinely to UGA, Bama and TAMU/OU. He is basically the SEC's James Franklin - his record looks impressive until you dig in and see that he rarely beats anyone good.

Sumrall might be worse than Drink, or he might be much better. I am willing to gamble on the "much better," especially considering that he won't be nearly as expensive.

I’m on board with Sumrall. I think it’s time for Auburn to go back to a defensive minded head coach. From some of the talk I’ve seen, it’s not a stretch to think that he would keep Durkin. Also have heard Neal Brown floated as OC.

I feel like AU is testing the floor here with Sumrall and other similar names. I see him as a fallback plan if we strike out on a bigger target. I simply don't believe Cohen or the program in general is in position to quietly make a safe hire. There's too much pressure this go around to get this right.

There is no high level non-safe hire that we could realistically get. Your Lanning comment shows you are living in some fantasy land. Lanning isn't leaving Oregon, and nobody on his level is leaving their current school.

Dilly is about the best we could hope for, and is the only name being mentioned that would be on a level for sure above Sumrall. And the chances he leaves his alma mater are probably on the lower side.

The absolute worst thing we could do is screw around competing with LSU and Florida trying to hire Kiffin or Lanning, waiting until after the playoffs to get turned down, thereby missing out on the decent candidates, and winding up with another desperation Freeze type hire (AKA exactly what happened last go around).

He's had a top 30 offense in 5 of the last 6 years, which is pretty good. Bad news is, it's an air raid offense. Is Auburn built for that? Besides a new OL, what would we need to change?

no it didn’t

we hired Freezus on 11/28/22, which means we were negotiating with him for weeks before the Iron Bowl, which was played 2 days earlier on 11/26

he was always AU’s fallback if Kiffin turned us down

I was big on Spavital in the past way back when he was at WVU I believe his name was floated around as OC for GUs.

Haven't followed him since then really. Seams to be well thought of in the coaching world tho

Wasn't he at A&M under Sumlin and caught the end of Manziel's time after Kliff Kingsbury left there?
