He brags all of the time about Cohen giving him his personal phone number and they talk all of the time. Why did Cohen grant him that long interview?

Those two are in cahoots.

Here's a wild arse guess as to what happened. The Faulkner trial balloon went up, and it caught someone's attention in the national media. It's just too juicy an angle to ignore given Auburn's perceived rep of booster interference. They probably then spent several days trying to track down the veracity of the story, which ultimately spooked the Auburn AD who wished to avoid entangling themselves in it. Word gets back to Mike G that he needs to do some damage control and he drops the podcast where he starts by addressing fan speculation that Auburn was handcuffing candidates with staff retention and picking their staff.. Strangely enough, only person vocally bitching about it was me. Was it a hot topic on another board I'm unaware of?? So now by Thursday, this story was probably percolating for a week, and once it exploded, Sumrall bounced.. So yeah, it was either a really poor thought out trial balloon or someone decided to shite on Cohen's hire

Potentially lost Sumrall to UF

Either Cohen retained DJD without Sumrall approval

Or

UF came swept the rug under us offering 9-10 mill and full control, when we offered 7-8.

10 mil for sumrall is absurd. I’d rather keep durkin and fire him 3 years from now.

At one point the national guys claimed Sumrall was the guy for Auburn.

At one point Sumrall turned down the interview for Florida

At one point Ole Miss only wanted Sumrall if Kiffin left.

But then Ole Miss mods no longer considered Auburn the greatest threat to securing Sumrall.

And then Florida mods started throwing out
Sumrall was back in play.

You still balked at any suggestion of rumblings being more tban hearsay)

And finally, National Writers now think differently.

But Mike G said something definitively so the grand plan that has been marinating for a month will go on!

You’d rather the program become even less relevant on a national level and then have to pay more money to try to get Auburn out of the hole? How does that make sense?

The Mike G. reporting was always so absurd that is could never possibly be true. The guy was claiming that we interviewed multiple candidates and ALL OF THEM were so happy with Durkin staying that they in fact were the ones asking Cohen if he would stay on as DC. What the frick is the likelihood of that? Literally every candidate we talked to was DEMANDING that the interim-HC stayed on?

Then he doubles down and claims that not only do we have the DC locked down, but we also somehow have an OC picked out as well before there is even a HC announced .

I just basically said I was wrong and you were right, so what more are you looking for? I'm not gonna sit here and try to bicker back and forth on the matter, no point. I'm just gonna sit back and see what actually happens now. i'm not here to try and build cred, just for discussion.

The Buster Faulkner name was bizarre. AC's being thrown out before the HC was even hired probably had a hand in spooking Sumrall. I feel like AD should cosign to a more organic approach to rebuilding the program.

But he said that Cohen was not pushing it on potential HC candidates. That Cohen was just laying the groundwork for staff retention on what they wanted including potential OC candidates.

No I wasn’t clear. I don’t think either of them will get us over the 7-5/8-4 hump. So might as well pay less for the next placeholder.

If we have to fail I’d rather be know as trying to go after the hot commodity than settling for a coach that no one else wanted as a head coach. Especially if it reinforces the notion Auburn has to mettle in hiring.

Exactly. at least go get a guy that other people want and if he still fails then at least you can say you tried.

I don't think our money people had the stomach to do another reset on the staff. Cohen was probably given parameters to work with, and keep the defense staff was one. I will be shocked if anyone on the offensive side is let go. We will promote a DC and roll on. You all better get used to it.
