“We aren’t talented enough yet to play badly and win”

Something just irks me about this response from Freeze. Every time we lose, lack of talent is the excuse. Why are we consistently playing “badly”?

I see no fire in him. He always looks like he is going to cry....

We lost to NMST by three TDs at home and didn't even turn the ball over.
NMST smacked our arse and our wife's and made us like it because we didnt have the girth to say stop.
Need more talent...

Do you think those teams are more talented than auburn? Or could it be our coaches can't coach the team up for games we're expected to win? Serious question. Every time auburn loses to a nmst, cal, Maryland type team....the guys look completely dead flat!

I think Freeze is a horrible motivator but I have questioned our servicable talent for years now. We might not be worst than NMST but we aren't so much better that coaching deficient squads playing badly can still "get mad" and win. I stress NMST punked us whenever they wanted and they never got tired of doing it
We arent really rated 18th. Maybe 81st.

UGA, Texas, Bama. Sure. There's no denying it right now. You have to play perfect to beat them. Hugh's argument works for them.
Cal has a 23% blue-chip ratio (zero 5 stars). Miss St. has a 27% ratio. Cal would literally be the least talented team in SEC (other than Vandy).
Talent is NOT the reason for the loss. AU was just ill prepared and flat.

We have blue chips like mid-high 4 stars Holden Geriner that doesn't have it in him to be successful.
There are others like Woodward that we have been waiting on for years or that never panned out (big kat bryant)
We got Holden so we are that much better for it in real life and not just on paper? Not buying that.

We had the TALENT to beat NMSU, Maryland and Cal.
But we weren't prepared, our gameplan was subpar, we didn't adjust, we weren't physical, we made continual head-scratching decisions and we have zero identity.
This is a coaching problem that has haunted us since Tuberville left town. Freeze, so far, looks worse on that front than the rest... even though the talent seems on the upswing.

Agree- we may not have talent to beat top level SEC- but we have it to beat those teams. We don’t have that “dog” mentality anymore.

Our best OL last year was a 2* we got from the portal.
Saban literally sought him out to shake his hand.
Our best player was Jarquez, a former 3 star.
That's the kind of talent I want. Not guys with over-inflated rankings.

I know what you're saying. But if you look at all 85 scholly players, the blue-chip ratio is a pretty good measure. You can find a couple guys on everyone's roster who were busts, but when you look at all 85 you see patterns.
No team has ever won the natty with a ratio lower than 50%. In 2010 and 2013, AU was right around that 50% level.
Texas is at about 75% right now. UGA is over 80%. Bama and Ohio State are near 90%. Bama has more 5 stars than any team right now with 17. Even if you searched every AU roster since 2000, you probably wouldn't find 17 five stars total. Bama has 17 today on their roster. (And this is after several transferred when Saban retired).
But this is all moot when talking about Cal. Our blue-chip ratio is at 53% right now. Theirs is at 23%. But when I watched, I saw their guys playing better, more motivated, and better coached on offense.

Whose fault is that Freeze? Several portal QBs, and you decided to stick with the Jumanji kid after Cam Ward asked for too much money.

He’s not saying otherwise.
He’s saying we don’t have the talent to sleepwalk to wins in those games.
Sleepwalking is his fault. He’s not deflecting. Y’all are just hungry for blood

I know and that's the problem. We're worrying about an average transfer QB when the problem happens before we even put that QB on the field. Thorne has a limited ceiling, but the bigger problem is if so does our head coach.

We made yet another horrible coaching hire. Wake me up when this guy can pull off a 10-win season because I don’t see it. He is a fake arse scumbag piece of trash. Props to those that were worried about this from early on.
Would love for old stale offensive guru Hugh to prove me wrong. But he won’t. Sorry fellas, we’re screwed. I’ve seen what I need to see. This guy is a hack.
Seriously, does anyone think we can get to a 20-win season or playoff with Hugh Freeze?
Yikes

I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure our roster beats Cal's by every metric.

Our played out coaching staff doesn’t beat Cal’s though.
Hey Hugh, 2012 called and wants its offense back.

I screamed from the rooftops he was at best an 8-4 coach. Now, we wish he was an 8-4 coach.
Still hopeful he can right the ship, because we need him to. Can't be in the perpetual hot seat coaching carousel. That's cancer to the program.

This is a good point. We used to punch teams in the mouth even when we weren’t as talented. Many slug-feats with LSU I remember. There are a few players who have some dog in them like Jeremiah Wright and Kendrick Faulk but they came by it naturally. It’s not being instantiated in the “culture” (to use a Freeze term”).
You see those pregame speeches from Kirby Smart and those guys are ready to rip off heads and shite down necks when the ball comes off that tee. You couple that with the talent he has and you can see why they are 3TD’s better than anyone in the country.
