Auburn Undercover. Made some good points..
Old Fans - Happy
New Fans - Think we should have done more
The truth is, when Shug Jordan arrived as head coach in 1951, Auburn was arguably the conference’s most downtrodden member, weaker than any Mississippi school and far weaker than Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
As good as Auburn’s story has been....., it is time for those accomplishments to ascend to another level. If Auburn is ever going to be a consistent player on the national stage, year after year, now is the time.
Are you pleased with Auburn’s football accomplishments?

I like AU because it is my school. I hope our fanbase never gets on the level with the gumps, even though we are trending that way. I am happy with the football success. I want the school to focus on climbing the rankings, and our endowment to grow.

As a school who is named after the town it is in and not a "state" school it is amazing what we have done on a national level. It gives us a unique identity and we have run with other "powers" out there. I am happy.

I have always viewed our name as a blessing. If you are being honest, the state of Alabama is low on the list of places to live in this country. It might as well be South Dekota to people not born here. If it weren't for the proximity to the beach, we would be Arkansas.

I'm very happy with my University. It was a great place to go to college, and it is still a great place to visit. It is enjoyable that we have a good football team, and winning the national championship in 2010 was great and IMO really took the pressure off.
At the end of the day it shouldn't really matter how the football team does, but most of us on this site care a bit more than we should.
If I had my choice, Auburn would have slightly more success, but not much more. It would be less enjoyable if there were too many random bandwagon fans w/ no connection to the University or if we couldn't enjoy a solid season with a win over a couple of rivals because we thought the team should win the national championship every year. I believe both of those things would happen w/ a significant amount more success.

I agree with the poster above me in that I really want to see the university succeed at the end of the day. Especially in my particular college because it looks good on myself and everyone that had the Auburn experience

We were quickly sinking to Mississippi/Kentucky/Vandy level during the Barfield years as well.
The Sainted Coach Patrick Fain Dye came in and turned it around and its been different ever since.

We were low when Barfield was there, but we had some decent years and some dang good football players. Biggestg problem was he could not compete with the Bear.
I agree with you 100% on Saint Dye...He changed the dynamic of Auburn football forever.
Gave the best answer in Coach Introduction Press Conference History... 60 Minutes...
Question: How long will it take to beat Alabama?
As an Old Timer: The Nattie in 2010 was huge, I had waited my whole life for that one, it was the final thing I needed. That was the only time I ever cried at a football game as I was thinking of my Dad who had passed away.

Dye was at Auburn long enough for his philosophy and belief that Auburn could be formidable to sink in and create culture that we experience today. Pretty remarkable what he accomplished.
And contrary to popular belief amongst people who believe he doesn't play a shtick on the radio, he's a very intelligent man.

Dye's basic concept was "frick those guys." I have seen AU fans on the rant bash Dye, and I have no clue why. Without him, AU football would be on the level with Georgia Tech ATM.

I want ten win seasons on a consistent basis with championships sprinkled in. Anything less is unacceptable. Period.

He absolutely never should have taken on the AD role while he was still running the football program. That was the Bryant-sized ego coming out in him, and it ultimately led to his downfall (much to the detriment of the university he came to love).
But he will always hold a special place for permanently shifting the balance of football power in the SEC away from Tuscaloosa. As good as they have been since Saban took over (and they are very, very good), they are still a far cry from the dominance, off the field as well as on, that they had in the 60s and 70s under Bryant. Dye, and a to a lesser extent Dooley (an AU alum and Shug disciple), are largely responsible for the conference's transition from being basically a one-team league to the powerhouse it has become.

Would like to get to where we are winning an average of 9-10 games a year. Basically, what UGA has largely done for a while. If we can do that we'll probably play for championships from time to time.
But, I want Auburn to gain more academic respect as a foremost priority. We're a fine school but we are not putting money or efforts into the right places with consistency, and it's hurting the brand when compared to our competitors.
