That's the goal
I'm hoping a PhD from somewhere in Europe will help convince some department at Auburn to hire me, but it's a long shot
ETA: fixed title

Good luck. A PhD is no easy task. Lots of research and long hours of just looking at nothing. On second thought, the latter part makes it seem easy.

Sounds like you're speaking from experience?

Yep. Wasted tons of hours staring at absolutely nothing. Realized those projects were fruitless and moved on, and that was my major professor's research projects.
Seriously, get your PhD, find a good academic job that has solid travel and retirement benefits and call it a day.

Drinking a Lanier Special, mixing margaritas and hoping for the dirty sex.

Kind of the same. Only it is red wine. And none of that dirty stuff.

I understand the desire but that sounds boring as hell to me. Enjoy the daily grind of finding a way to make another buck.

I'd rather pound my balls with a mallet than listen to that.

Good luck on the rest

, I'll be studying in Germany next year before coming back to Emory to finish.
I have a question for ya Sandman. What kind of job would you plan on getting with that kind of fancy degree?

This has already been addressed
I know nothing of this "actual employment" of which you speak
(Though I will say, in a year or two I'll have a Master of Divinity from Emory, which, though it's typically the "preacher degree" (in which I have less than zero interest), finding a non-churchy job with one of those isn't hard. I will also have no student loans so I won't have as much of an immediate financial burden.
I'm also proceeding through my graduate studies keeping in touch with faculty from a couple different colleges/universities around here, figuring out what I need to do to maximize my employment potential after I get my PhD. That's one of the reasons I'm hopefully doing my doctoral work in Europe -- degrees from the European system are typically more versitile in their use than are American PhDs.
And ideally a resume that includes "degree from Emory," "3.75+ GPA," "worked as a research assistant," and "studied in Germany under so-and-so" should help me get into a big-name school where employment opportunities are much greater coming out than would be a degree at a state university. About the only other thing I need to make sure I get done in the next two years is work on getting published, which should come naturally if everything goes as planned.)
