When the standard for going to a bowl is 6-6, it is a given that there are too many bowl games. With the CFP, the overwhelming majority are and will be glorified scrimmages. Kirby Smart says this needs to be fixed. I think many fans would agree. So how do we do that:
(1) cut all bowls except those hosting playoff games?
(2) move the early transfer portal to after the championship game?
(3) move the early HS signing day back?
(4) move the bowl games to August and made them neutral site Kickoff games for the teams? (I think this was Kiffen's suggestion)

Bowl games make too much money. Even the shittiest bowl performs better than NBA games ratings wise. As long as the money is there so are the meaningless bowl games.

Would they not make as much money in August, maybe even more if they meant something?

All of the above plus add a G5 playoff!

Gets you some decent non-conference games.

My guess would be a lot of people are off work in December/Holidays meaning more eyes on the tv.

Bowl games don’t matter. Coaches are not able to recruit and actually prepare for the bowl game.

It’s a new thing

Nicole Auerbach has an interesting piece in The Athletic about this with some decent suggestions, most notably:
quote:

2. Allow bowls to directly pay players to play. Now, I understand you’d need the NCAA to change its rules to allow direct pay-for-play in this circumstance, but the national governing body is already moving in the direction of allowing schools to sign their own athletes to NIL deals, so this isn’t too far of a stretch. Plus, we already know that NIL collectives combined with the transfer portal have created what is essentially pay-for-play, anyway. You could also have collectives include bowl clauses in their contracts with players. Either way, this won’t stop all opt-outs for potential first- and second-round NFL Draft picks, but it might help incentivize participation for mid/late-round guys and/or those on the fence about transferring.
and
quote:

4. Get rid of the early signing period. You can’t move the transfer portal window back because athletes need to be able to enroll in their new schools at the start of the semester in January. The CFP is expanding, so December will be even busier next year with first-round games on campus and then an additional quarterfinal round. The only realistic option of what can move is the early signing period. It’s creating absolute chaos for coaches, who have to manage bowl prep, the portal, staffing changes and also recruiting all at once.
her other suggestions are of questionable merit, but implementing these two would definitely have a positive impact

Would not the same logic apply to HS players who graduate in December? To the point, why keep pretending these are scholar athletes? Why can't they practice in spring if they are not enrolled?

Bowl games in August? How does that reward the team that had the (allegedly) bowl-worthy record? Its a new team in August.

With opt outs and transfers isn't it that the case already

Players don’t need to be “rewarded” for bowl games or for the season.

Players are highly compensated with cash.

Make bowl selections in the spring. Make every team play bowl game to start season. Then no bowls at end of year aside from playoffs.

That would be awesome to me. Bowls would mean something and everyone playing.

Now, how you pick for bowls....that's another question...maybe base it on prior year record

I agreed with all her suggestions, except the pop tart thing.
