I think trusting Okoro with the ball and letting him make the right basketball play could be huge for this team going forward.

I would rather see Okoro making the decisions than Doughty.

Heck yes. I was gonna raise hell if he was left off.

Anybody remember our most recent one? Was Vot?

Edit: Just googled it. Think our only other two Mcdonald's AA's were Frank Ford and Korvotney Barber.

I don't follow basketball recruiting virtually at all, but do we have a chance at any of the undecided's?

Greg Brown and Jalen Green. Green is the more likely of the 2.

Many basketball insiders including Corey Evans believe Auburn to be the darkhorse for Green. Which would be huge. He has bouncy springs for knees. Biggest threat is Memphis

We are also going head to head against Kentucky for Jonathon Kuminga, a 2021 5 star prospect that may reclass. Evan Daniels says Auburn and Kentucky have both emerged as front runners.

Glad to see Cooper on the McDonald's All American list.

It still burns me a little to see Kessler on it, going to NC.

UNC has a losing record right now. Kessler might be regretting.

So we are firmly in the mix for 2020 #1 and 2021 #1 who may reclass to 2020.

This is totally normal..

Frank Ford was our very first, in the 80's.

With the way they recruit they should never be as bad as they are now.

Interesting interview with Shariffe’s coach. Pretty fair projection of Shariffe’s abilities at the collegiate level:

quote:

Here's our recent Q&A with Cooper's high school coach, Mike Thompson.

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You’ve been around Sharife for a long time … what is Auburn getting in him as a player, as a person?

THOMPSON: You know what, he’s a hard worker. He stays in the gym a lot. He’s a gym rat. IQ is really high. He comes from a good family. He does the right thing. And I think that’s important in college athletics. (Isaac) Okoro and him are good buddies. Babatunde (Akingbola) — Stretch — all those guys were here. They have a special relationship and they do a good job of doing the right thing character wise.

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You lost some really good players from last season’s state championship team. How is Sharife handling that and has he had to take on a new role?

THOMPSON: It’s been a little bit frustrating for him. I think a kid like him who all of his buddies are gone, I kind of think some days he has one foot at Auburn and one foot here. He played so long with Alyn Breed (a Providence signee now at IMG Academy in Florida) and (Quinton) McElroy and Okoro and Stretch and Jared Jones (now at Northwestern) — and all those guys are gone. He played with them his whole life.

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: So it’s an adjustment period …

THOMPSON: Tremendous adjustment. And he’s handled it really well. Don’t think he’s played nearly as well this year as he did last year. But he had a lot of comfort in what he was doing last year and it was a little bit different. Just trying to do more than he probably should. Taking bad shots sometimes because, you know, he wants to do it himself sometimes. He hates to lose. And we’ve lost four games — that’s a tremendous amount for him.

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: He’s obviously an immense talent … what are his best traits?

THOMPSON: His IQ offensively is tremendous. He can see the floor extremely well. His handle on the ball is really really good. And, he’s fast with the ball. He really passes people and gets up and down the floor a lot. So he has a lot of speed. His offensive game, I think it’ll be great for setting people up at Auburn. I don’t think he’ll score near as much but he won’t have to. I think he’ll be tremendous at handling pressure and getting the ball to people.

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Tonight (Tuesday) wasn’t his best shooting night, but then you look up and he finished with a quiet — if there is such a thing — 24 points. How does he do it night in and night out?

THOMPSON: He can score quick now and at this level he can get to the basket. In college, I don’t know if he’s going to be able to do that so much. I think he’s going to be more of a perimeter guy. He may be able to surprise me and do that more as he gets stronger. But his ability to handle the game and manage the game is — nobody close to him.

Is Auburn overlooked by McDonald's All-America committee?

by Brandon Marcello18 minutes ago
AUBURN, Alabama — Maybe it's the shoes.

Whatever it is, Bruce Pearl believes Auburn doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from the committee selecting McDonald's All-Americans.

Auburn, an Under Armour school, has not been affiliated with the big-time apparel players in high school and college basketball — Nike and adidas — and that might be a contributing factor to why some of the signees the Auburn coach has brought on board in recent years have not garnered consideration on the prestigious McDonald's All-American team.

True or not, that ended this week when incoming point guard Sharife Cooper was selected as a participant, making him the third Auburn signee in history to be recognized by the committee (Frank Ford, 1983; Korvotney Barber, 2005).

"We’ve been a program that’s been McDonald’s-less — McDonald’s All-American-less — and I kind of like that," Pearl said. "I’ve had a lot of guys that I thought should’ve been McDonald’s All-Americans that weren’t. We don’t wear the right shoe, and we’re not made for television or branded by, you know, special preseason events — and I get it; we’re not there. Those programs recruit great players because they’re great programs and great coaches and great television exposure, and they get all the McDonald’s All-Americans. We got to play against them. What I don’t want to happen, and I think in some cases like with a Mustapha Heron or Isaac Okoro, coming to Auburn didn’t help their ability to get into the McDonald’s game. That bothers Isaac Okoro. It bothers me."

In fact, Pearl and Cooper were convinced Cooper's chances at landing on the All-American team might be damaged if he signed with Auburn during the early signing period. The McDonald's All-American game is sponsored by adidas.

Cooper is averaging more than 28 points per game at McEachern High during his senior season. He led his high school to a perfect 32-0 record in 2019 and was named USA Today’s National Player of the Year.

"Sharife Cooper almost delayed his signing because he was concerned it would cost him a chance to get in the McDonald’s All-American game," Pearl said. "That tells you a little bit about the politics, but he was the National Player of the Year a year ago on an undefeated team. His team was ranked No. 1 in the country. He’s played this year in spite of a pretty decent groin injury; he’s not even been 100 percent, and without Babatunde (Akingbola) and without Isaac, his high school team is not what they were in the past, and yet he played through it, because he really did want it. To be a McDonald’s All-American, to be an All-American, that’s it. So, when I say these things, I know it’s a very high honor, but these high school kids want it. They work so hard for it that you don’t want to be a place that hurts their chances to get it. So, it’s great for Sharife and we’re really proud of him."

Cooper is ranked No. 18 nationally in the 247Sports Composite.

“He can score quick now and at this level he can get to the basket,” McEachern High coach Mike Thompson told 247Sports recently. “In college, I don’t know if he’s going to be able to do that so much. I think he’s going to be more of a perimeter guy. He may be able to surprise me and do that more as he gets stronger. But his ability to handle the game and manage the game is — nobody close to him."

Okoro’s brother has recently been on twitter railing on the committee for not picking his brother.

It would be interesting to know what each McD all-american kid's committed/signed college is and what shoe they are affiliated with...
