Auburn President: Bruce Pearl has done ‘a remarkable job
quote:
KANSAS CITY, Missouri — What a difference a year makes. What a difference a trip to the Final Four makes. Auburn president Steven Leath is completely on board the Bruce Pearl train after 18 months of on-again, off-again issues off the court with Pearl’s program — though the head coach has never been implicated in wrongdoing.
“He’s done a remarkable job,” Leath told Auburn Undercover. “We’re so proud of the effort he’s made, we’re proud of the way the kids have performed on the court and they’re doing the best they have ever done academically. All and all, just an exceptional job.”
The Auburn basketball program was wrapped in the nationwide FBI investigation into college basketball, which included the arrest of then-assistant coach Chuck Person on six federal bribery and fraud charges in October 2017. He pled guilty in March to avoid trial. Later, in a completely unrelated matter, first-year assistant Ira Bowman was fingered by former Penn head coach Jerome Allen for allegedly helping him handle a bank account tied to a bribery scheme instigated by a parent to pave a path for their child entrance into the Ivy League school in 2015. Bowman was placed on paid leave by Auburn in mid-March and missed the entire SEC Tournament and the Tigers’ NCAA Tournament run that has included an incredible 12-game winning streak, wins against the three winningest programs in college basketball history and the school’s first trip to the Final Four.
As it related to the Person and FBi scandal, Pearl and Leath were in a stand-off in the fall of 2017. Pearl was guided by his attorney to not speak to Leath about the allegations against Person, but the coach and school president finally discussed the program in the spring, and Pearl received a one-year contract extension after winning an SEC championship.
Leath has remained relatively silent on the situation until Sunday, when he was beaming with pride about Pearl and the Tigers following a 77-71 overtime win against Kentucky in the Elite Eight. “Not everybody sees it, but we try to work hard, get on the same page, do everything right and do everything with a purpose and I think we’ve mostly come through the other side stronger than ever,” Leath said as he stood on the confetti-laced floor of the Sprint Center.
Pearl believes the off-the-court allegations were never a distraction, even as forward Danjel Purifoy and center Austin Wiley sat on the bench last season after their families allegedly received payments through Person in an effort to steer them toward agents when their professional careers begin in the near future. “It’s just not the focus,” Pearl said. “There are so many challenges, and the preparation and all the other things we were working toward. The full-time academic loads. A couple things that went wrong really just weren’t the focus of the team. It was great getting Danjel and Austin back this year and having their eligibility restored but we were able to win without them and having them back this year enables us to continue to win.”
No. 5 seed Auburn (30-9) faces No. 1 seed Virginia in the Final Four on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:09 p.m. CT on CBS.

Not sure if fake, since April Fools and all, but the Athletic is reporting that Kentucky is offering Calipari a lucrative lifetime contract to counter the UCLA offer which was 6 years for 48 million. Calipari was already the highest paid coach in CBB making 9.2 million a year at Kentucky. Don’t really know why Kentucky would go any more lucrative than that.

I've seen it on Bleacher Report and a couple other places too

Who is UCLA also targeting?

2019 NCAA Tournament: Auburn is playing above its level as it heads to a historic Final Four appearance
The Tigers are playing better than they actually are as they get ready to go to Minneapolis
More disrespect from CBS. Not linking Dodd's article. We all knew the potential of this group after the last few years. First, we're cheating with godly players. Now, we shouldn't have the talent to be in a Final Four.
He was quoting Sonny. Take it up with him.
quote:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Sonny Smith is 82 now. The only other Auburn coach to lead the Tigers to an Elite Eight appearance works on the Tigers radio broadcasts now -- a relic of a different age. But nine decades on the planet have instilled a measure of insight. When asked how these disrespected and disabled Tigers took down Kentucky in the Midwest Regional final, the answer was brilliant for its simplicity.
"They play better than they are," Smith said.

That’s exactly what a good team does. The sun of the whole is more than the individual parts

For our game against UVA, I wonder if we throw out unusual lineups.
UVA struggles vs shooting lineups, they don't crash off glass by design and their typical lineup is long & athletic not bulky/strong
We should throw this lineup out there as a rotation
PG- Harper
SG - Brown
SF- Doughty
PF- Dunbar
C- Purifoy

Not a basketball expert but it seems with our profiency with the 3 ball, and our fast paced ball movement, that’s our team is tailor made to defeat the packline defense.
getting turnovers and points in transition will be much more difficult but on paper seems our offense should be able to score if they execute

I hope we do. I’ve wanted us to do it at least once just to see how it works. If ever there was a matchup to do it against, it’s this one.

They will adjust some, but if we are able to bring them out then I like our chances at getting to the rim.

We're going to need big games from Dunbar, Doughty, and Purifoy. McLemore will get a lot of open looks too.
I don't see them letting Brown and Harper get 20 each like Kentucky did.

Bennett historically will sink with the Packline ship
He would rather make Doughty/Dunbar/Purifoy prove they can make 3s against closeouts the entire game than abandon their defense

Kevin Scarbinsky sounds like an Auburn homer these days.
BTW, according to him, Auburn is the first 30 game winner ever in the state.
