We're due. I remember watching the USC game in..'04(?) from my apartment in Chicago while on a work assignment. One of the few games I can still "feel" and remember. Felt shitty. A big win Saturday would take a lot of that away. Let's do this Auburn!

I’m going to keep saying it. Hoping it’s like the announcer that won’t shut up about a kicker not missing a kick all season right before………

Could have gone either way on that one. I remember Auburn driving with 1:26 left...

I remember Carnell had a big first half… but either got hurt or gassed in second half. I wanna say it was tied 17-17 late and USC went on a long drive to score a TD… but with our offense it might as well been a 20 pt lead.

ETA it’s crazy to think our OC that day is now the OC at Texas A&M

0-2? 2002 At USC, and 2013 BCS National Championship. Is there any others?

Thanks for the nice summary.

We have a new coach, a new staff, and a mostly new team, so we are a bit of a mystery too. We beat UMass like we should have, but they are not a good team.

Our strengths are the running backs and secondary, along with the kicking game. The OLine, which has stunk for several years looks much better (against UMass). We seem to have a serviceable QB and our receivers have shown some promise. The biggest concern is the DLine. Usually, that is an area of strength, but not this year. I've seen clips of your RB OTT, and he concerns me. He is good.

I think this one is a tossup. It's just too soon to know what we have, or what Cal has.

I think you guys will find Auburn to be a friendly place next year and I hope you guys bring a good crowd.

But Cal never had the man that developed Tom Brady.

Tom Brady wanted to come to Cal (he is local) but we passed on him for a golden boy from SoCal named Pat Barnes. Never heard of him? Yeah...

Ott is outstanding and is a 3 down back as he is a very good receiver as well. His backup, Ifanse, is a transfer from Montana State. Big producer at that level but doesn't have the burst that Ott does. Very smart runner though and seems to find 3 yards out of nothing. Had 3 TDs last week. If Jackson is playing QB, you'll need to put a spy on him. Ridiculously fast and hard to bring down. Just hope he doesn't make stupid throws when he doesnt need to.

Jeremiah Hunter (#3) is the best receiver but Cal runs 7-8 deep there. Not much drop off between the 1st and 2nd units

The more and more it seems to me that AU and Cal are virtual mirror images of each other - schemes, personnel, coaching, game 1 results, both prepping for 2 QBs, excellent RB rooms, everything, EXCEPT special teams, and that might make the difference. I think this is going to be one of the better and more exciting games this season and a chess match, away. Cal is no joke. Just hope we can come back with a win. I'm still calling it a pick 'em. WDE

ETA from SEC and PAC 10 OL players of the week topic below. I think Cal (and their 17 fans) will be absolutely lit. Gold Out and their stadium's 100th anniversary. They will be up for Auburn.

quote:

Cal (1-0) will host perennial national and SEC power Auburn (1-0) in its home opener Saturday when the Tigers visit Berkeley for the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Gold Out contest will be televised live by ESPN and kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT under the lights at California Memorial Stadium, which is celebrating 100 years in 2023.

Welcome Fire Starkey. War Eagle.

A few here get their panties in a wad if a gaijin (outsider / foreigner) is allowed access to this sacred board, but most of us practice our Southern Hospitality and are generally good people infatuated with college football and Auburn sports, football in particular. 24/7/365.

Thanks for your posts and insights. What I wouldn't give to make it to the game this weekend. I was born and raised in Auburn until I moved to Japan after graduating AU in '94. I don't make it to many games much these days, but I am up all hours of the night and day watching college football, and AU in particular. 7:30 kickoff your time works just fine for me - 11:30 Sunday morning. Can't wait - I think it is going to be a very memorable game one way or the other.

I hope you and yours can make the return trip to Auburn next year. You will be well taken care of and few stadium / gameday atmospheres and traditions can match Jordan Hare, the Eagle flight, Tiger Walk. Auburn is a good place with good people. Make friends and plans now.

Question / request - What kind of crowd / atmosphere do you expect Saturday? Sellout? Rowdy? I saw this will be a Gold Out game and your stadium is 100 years old this year. Are Bears fans pumped, about your win last week, your team, playing Auburn? How big a deal is it? What can we expect? When was your last sellout? Capacity? Traditions / other stuff we should know?

I saw ticket prices ranging from 43-562$.

TIA. I may have more questions. Hoping for a clean, exciting, well-played, injury-free, respectful, hard-hitting game.

Thanks for the welcome, I enjoy mixing with other fans teams with a few notable exceptions. As I mentioned, Cal fans are extremely excited to visit Auburn next year although I suspect we'll be getting very familiar with the Southeast over the next few years with our acceptance into the ACC. We usually travel well for "unique" games, we brought 12k to Notre Dame last year for example. I expect my crew of 12-15 will be there next year for sure so early calls for tailgate recs! Ha...

Memorial stadium, now that we've spent $500M (or whatever it was) on renovations is really spectacular. The east side is built into a hill and as mentioned elsewhere, the Hayward Fault runs right through the stadium (thus the hefty price tag on reno). Above the stadium you'll see a few hardy souls sitting on the hillside...its a tradition called "Tightwad Hill" and our cannon is up there that gets fired when we score. In the stadium, pre renovations, you could see gaps in the walls and portions of the splintered wood bench seating from various shakes over the years...Built after WWI, the exterior has been largely preserved (the other part of the hefty reno cost) and the setting is truly one of the most spectacular in all of college football.

WARNING FOR VISITORS The walk to the stadium is all uphill. Its mostly a gradual slope but near the stadium it gets steeper and there is no parking nearby. So folks with mobility issues should be prepared. I believe there are limited opportunities for golf cart rides for older or mobility impaired folks but not sure how consistent it is.

Stadium holds 65k I think? Used to be much larger capacity but they sacrificed seats (that people weren't filling anyway) for better sight lines. From what I've heard, I think there will easily be 55k in attendance but I've also heard folks say sources on Twitter say there are less than 3k tickets left as of yesterday. Figure we'll see maybe 10k Auburn fans? We'll see...I will say the Cal fan base has been galvanized by the move to the ACC. The fan base is seriously pissed off at our leadership over how badly they botched the Pac12 TV negotiations and their lack of strategic foresight over how things shook out. So complacent and happy with winning national titles in swimming and water polo. Blech. That said, our NIL collective has been gearing up for the past year and looks to be extremely competitive. We'll have a whole new men's bball roster that I expect to win 20+ this season (after a delicious 3-29 record last year oy) and we raised $1.2M since Friday with the ACC news. So I expect Cal to go all in for the next 5-6 years to see if we can stay relevant in the next re-alignment kerfuffle that I expect in 2029 or so...
