Headed to Colorado in May with a focus of heading towards the NW parks. Any recommendations?

Appreciate it.

For you time.

eta: For all those who can provide help here, we are set to leave in the next week and a half. What are conditions like now for things like hiking in Estes Park and moving around Denver? We have looked at some sites, but local advice is always good. Any other recs? We’ve take into account a lot that has been posted on here, so everyone’s advice is greatly appreciated.

For your time, let us stand in solidarity with our Asian brethren.

That is a hell of a photo. Thank you. Haha

Flying in or driving? What time of the year? Touring or physical exertion type activities?

Traveling from a one stop base or accommodations as you travel?

Flying in. May. Looking at hiking, parks, star gazing, etc.

Most likely from a one stop. Flying in to Denver then will likely get a rental and drive from there. Looking to stay at the Stanley and do some sight-seeing. Is there a restaurant we need to hit, place we must go?

Staying at Stanley in Estes Park of course the Rocky Mountain National Park. That will give you a few hikes and exploring.

You take it all the way through you will go through Granby/ Granby Lakes. You can go into Winter Park. Kind of in the time you could have some snow still and not quite warm enough for the attractions in WP. They have a cool Alpine slide in Winter Park and shopping with some good eateries.

Estes village shopping is cool and have okay dining.

Coors brewery has tours. Don’t know when Six flags or the Aquarium open in Denver. You may be able to take in a Rockies baseball game.

Ft Collins has some decent places and Boulder.

You can take a trip through the RMNP and head to Steamboat Springs.

You can also head past winter park out to I 70 and hit all kinds of ski towns. Georgetown has a train trip you can take. Just West of there is Dillon/Silverton, Keystone and Breckenridge.

Leadville is kind of a cool mining town and then you have casino row in Blackhawk, CO.

Jonesy can help with some of this too and some Denver things to see and do. Lanier just went on a similar trip last year and may have some tips or suggestions.

There are a lot of good dining options available. Two that are unique in my book is the Buckhorn Saloon 100+ year old steakhouse on Osage I believe with traditional and non traditional food.

The Fort in Morrison CO. You can check out Red Rocks Amphitheater or even see if a concert will be available.

Depending on time and willingness to travel further there are other options. Glenwood Springs has a gondola ride. Idaho Springs has a zip line but I don’t know when it opens.

I hope that helps or gives you a starting point. Have fun. I love Colorado it has a lot of places to see and do.

In RMNP, Bear Lake trailhead has the most famous sights and and such, huge crowds. Plan accordingly. I like Moraine Park area for less people. Additionally, anything on the west side of the park will be significantly less people, but the western slope doesn’t have the same views.

Great hikes an hourish from Boulder:

Anything from Brainard Lake Recreation Area
Hessie Trailhead just outside of Nederland
4th of July Trailhead

I’ve always enjoyed the Bear Peak Loop in the Boulder Open Space as well, if you want to stay a little lower in elevation/need to stay around town

Grab a post hike beer and burger at Southern Sun in Boulder

Rent a bike in Fort Collins and hit up multiple breweries

Tube or fly fish the Poudre Canyon

Leadville is cool

Good stuff

Lots of breweries

You can get the Breweries tour or the brewery dispensary tour. Basically a limo stopping at breweries and smoking/eating weed.

Better check with RMNP before heading up. In May, could still have a lot of snow on the ground. Plus there may be fire damage and closures.

Are you looking for more outdoors, parks, and monuments?
Great Sand Dunes are fantastic! At night in the dunes, you can easily make out the Milky Way.
Mesa Verde NP was pretty cool. Black Canyon NP is awesome to see. Colorado NM was very scenic the first time. Dinosaur NM was interesting but it's in the middle of no where on the CO side.
If you are more into hiking, check out the COTREX app.
If you are into cool drives, check out Butler Motorcycle maps. It highlights the best paved roads.

Good info. Thanks. Yes, planning to do more outdoors stuff, so I will check out what you’ve listed.

If you're in Boulder, check out Flagstaff Mountain. Beautiful views of the city from up top, as well as some great trails.

Also, Lookout Mountain near Golden has great views of Denver and Golden, as well as the grave of Buffalo Bill at the top, and a museum about Cody.

The Colorado Railroad Museum is also in Golden.

Depending on how adventurous (or accident prone) you might consider purchasing a CORSAR card. It's bought much like a hunting permit, sold at the same places for $3.00 for a year, and covers costs incurred during a rescue. Typically things a rescue squad might need like a helicopter ride for someone in the outback.

Missed the part where you said visiting in May. As COAU notes, high country will still have a good bit of snow then. RMNP will have major trailheads accessible but getting up in elevation/towards the divide will be touch and go depending on snow levels this year. Also rivers/streams will be blown out with snow melt.

I was going to add that Trail Ridge Road will probably not be open in May. Which connects the two sides of RMNP

Fly fishing on the Frying Pan River near Basalt or the Roaring Fork through Carbondale should be on anyone’s list of considerations for May/June in colorado. Both places are about 30/45 minutes from Aspen

And check back in this thread closer to May and I’ll update you on Covid related restrictions for the different areas of the state, though I don’t expect them to be very limiting by May

Lost Creek Wilderness area will have accessible hiking in May, southwest of Denver.

Not super familiar with the southern part of the state but Great Sand Dunes is probably a good bet for May.
