Jhead says PMarsh spilled the beans about the Napier attempted hire last cycle and confirms that’s what he knew as well.

So spill the beans 247 stans.

-JGT co-signs to the story as well.

his neckline doesn't exist + bad camera angle, and he was licking his lips constantly throughout this podcast while his right eye is barely open.

It was something about Napier wanted to meet with higher ups (I'm assuming boosters) and Greene balked at it which ended the discussions of him coming here

Yeah I was just hearing this on the am740 app out of Montgomery.

Also said Bill Clark was shot down because he wanted to bring his entire staff.

Also quoted members of B.O.T. saying if they had known Gogue was going to get cold feet on the Kevin Steele plan and side with Allen Greene, they never would have fired Gus.

Interesting stuff.

ETA: Napier called Muschamp and Will told him it will work for him at Auburn as long as he has the full support of 5 powerbrokers. Napier asked Greene about meeting with those 5 and he said they could not.

IMHO Lane won’t schmooze but Prime might. Going to get interesting.

How did anyone with a brain think the fanbase was going to accept Steele as HC?

When you’re drunk on power you get delusional.

Just look at our government

What I had heard happened. Auburn was communicating via proxy with no offer out to feel out Napier, and he wanted to meet directly with AU and they rebuffed him, so he pulled his name from contention.

Maybe they were right.

I feel Steele was just going to be a stop gap for a couple of seasons especially coming off the Covid year.

I am pretty sure they only wanted Steele as a bridge hire. They were essentially firing what Gus did wrong but not yet firing what Gus did right: the recruiting networks, locking down the rest of the coaches for a continuation.

i mean that makes sense. why wouldn't they let him meet with these people? did they really think he (or anyone) would come if they couldn't meet with the most important donors/power players? that's ridiculous. i think any coach worth anything would want to meet with those people, and not being allowed to do so is a big time red flag for potential coaches. whoever did not allow him to meet with those guys is an idiot. not because i wanted napier, but because that's just flat out stupid and bad business. hopefully we have learned from our mistakes.

It was a shite show. We knew it was a shite show but we didn't know how bad it really was.
It's embarrassing how badly they mishandled it.
There were multiple ways to screw this up and they tried all of them at once.

Because, it sounds to me, like Greene (and now Gouge as well) we’re going rogue behind their backs.

ETA: and it looks like once it all started unraveling, Gouge was like “I’m out. I’m done helping out around here. Let me go retire.”

Who TF can blame Jay?

Dumb or not, would’ve been better than what we have endured since then.

I suppose. Steele didn’t exactly close well on signing day before Harsin was hired. The “we almost signed this guy” speech on signing day was very cringe.

Further confirming this thought: pretty sure the idea was "Hire Steele until Saban retires".

Which, meh.

Hopefully we have gotten to the point where the major boosters realize winning is more fun than a coach schmoozing you
