Have college teams always been able to add players to their roster in the middle of a season?

No, it is a recent development brought about by all the changes with the transfer portal. It could happen on occasion previously for unique cases, the current landscape of being able to do it pretty freely is new.

Used to have to be enrolled in the school but could join mid-season as long as you beat the university enrollment cut-off date. Not sure if that's still the case or not, seems like Bediako would have been late but maybe he enrolled a couple weeks ago which would have been close to on time

Austin Wiley was a midseason addition
Santiago Vescovi was a midseason addition.

So was Trayvon Reed and Jarnell Stokes to stick with the AU-UT trend

I had forgotten about Wiley. He came in that season in the 10th game.

I forgot about Reed. Pretty sure I read an Auburn ranter say they saw Reed smoking a cigarette after one of our games. I was like well he's a bust.
Difference between Wiley and Bediako is Wiley was always publicly in the works. Bama used the advantage of surprise to pry into an illegitimate pool of talent.

Wasn't Wiley also a reclass or am I remembering that incorrectly?

Yeah he reclassed early and that prompted an ESPN article of is Wiley going to start a trend of 1 and a half and done.

So my next question is can we just add someone that has eligibility as a walk on?

Bruce has often pointed to the Wiley signing as the moment he knew he would have real success coaching at Auburn

Yeah, nothing against Wiley but it's unfortunate that he never lived up to expectation. Seemed like a good kid but he had stone hands.

I have already discussed this on the main board, but the game is eventually going to evolve to where NBA teams are drafting players in the second round and placing them on preferred college teams. For decades (since Dirk Nowitzki I guess) teams have been drafting and stashing Euros to very little return. There are tons of euros that are drafted in the NBA for their player rights and potential and allowed to go back to finish out their contracts overseas, but very few foreigns(1st and 2nd round draft picks) ever work out because Euro ball is inferior and overseas development is rarely achieved. Even the Baylor guy that got drafted in the NBA and went back to college was a "draft and stash." He is playing for Baylor right now even though some NBA team still owns his rights.
NBA GMs will want better value from their second round by placing their draft picks in preferred colleges that are a better fit for their NBA program. Controlling the develpment of draft picks is far easier in America than controlling their development overseas so the next movement is drafting and stashing into American programs and the colleges turning into another form minor league basketball factories. This should obviously concern the basketball purists because the blue bloods will probably be the teams that enjoy partnerships with the NBA teams thus their rosters significantly stronger than the rest of the rosters. Instead of worrying with developing euros and HS talents, Auburn needs to focus on NBA relations and maybe get Adam Harrison to partner up with our program.
At this point the conservative estimates of 2nd round picks going back to college is about 5-10 per year. Nate Oats obviously took everyone by surprise and he will get to enjoy an unparalled advantage this year, but going forward our program needs to be examining their positon with the NBA and with the AAU clubs. I would not worry about the midseason stuff so much. There is a bigger progression into where our game is going that I would worry about.

I knew Bruce was going to be good just by seeing his Tennessee squad.

Who is Adam Harrison? I don't really keep with NBA, so forgive my ignorance. Google didn't really help me.

I knew he was a great coach but after his first 3 seasons I was concerned that even a great coach might not be able to get it done at Auburn.
