I've been debating this choice for a while. This will be my last run for another state championship. Playoffs start this coming weekend. I'll be hanging up the head coach label at the end of the run.

My youngest son will be a Senior next year and I think it's only fair he gets to play for another coach. I let one of my other son's play for Coach Mauldin at Trussville. Plus I'm getting old. The seasons are starting to run together and I would like to work more on my retirement nest egg.

I know no one cares but thought I would share. Major decision in my life. Next year will be the first in 46 years that won't be on a field as player or coach.

All the best to you in whatever is next.
That’s a long career in sports. I’m sure you helped many kids along the way.

I still have a couple more years to work as a teacher before I'm comfortable going to the private sector. I know I can make much more money and as some know I have a summer contract job that pays me big. So I think I'll be ok. I do however have a much younger wife. 10 years younger. I'm sure she will want to shut it down when I do as well. So gotta have that nest egg full.

How does Teacher Retirement work in Alabama?

Do you get the pension right away or wait until age 60?
Sliding scale?

Congrats!

After 25 years of service or 60 years old. I will wait until 58-60 before claiming. I will work at least 2-3 more years so that puts close to 55 if I work 3. Plus I have a 401k I invest in and the wife has an 403 or something like but can only invest in vanguard or some crap lol.

I got ya, i understand that.

My 8th grader is getting ready to make the move to high school, he plays WR.

Do you have any thoughts on the new coach (Holcomb) @ Southside? I know he was QB/WR at Hoover. I don't know that much about him, just kind of wondering if he had a good rep.

I’m not familiar with him. Where did he coach at before becoming head coach?

Will say what he needs to work on is getting out of being jammed at the line. Especially if he is an on the line WR. Some of the older DBs will be able to stop him cold in his route at the line if he can’t break the hands of the DB on him. No sure what class the QB will be for your varsity team but either get him on a jugs machine catching balls thrown much harder and deep balls with air under it. High and not accurate to make him adjust his route to track the ball. Also get him in a speed and agility camp for the summer and lift every other day. For a young beginner lifter I would advise working on building muscle depth. I advise my young players to do the 5x5 program. I will try to find a link.

He was HC at Crossville, then left to coach QB/WR at Hoover.
He spent 1 year as OC at Alpharetta.

Thanks Coach, he will love this. He is always trying to find workouts online to help him get bigger and stronger.

His plan is to attend a couple different speed and agility camps this summer.

He will probably bring a very structured approach however I don’t know him but programs like those mentioned are just run differently than some coach moving up from a tiny program that only has 30 players. If he was at Hoover I’m sure he has the respect of a lot of his peers. If I can I’ll reach out to Andy Urban and see if I can find out some info about him. Andy is the AD at Hoover.

Thanks for the feedback, i never played a skill position. I was just a dog on D-line so i'm a little behind when he asks me what he needs to work on at WR. My normal response is "Catch the ball".
