So where was this magical talent that led us to 8-5 and 3-9 in the years leading up to 2013?

We had two 2014 first round picks in Robinson and Ford / 16(?) total draft picks to include our entire backfield minus Grant and Marshall. We had 2 5-star freshmen in Monty Adams and Carl Lawson and tons of highly rated 4 stars throughout the roster.

We also what ended up having the right personnel and the right scheme at the right time in 2013.

I would contend that you are correct that Hugh's defensive roster is not on 2013 talent level when Gus took over.

The two are different but its not like there was a ton of offensive talent before Gus took over.

Gus was gone for a total of one season so basically the entire offensive roster was recruited under him to play in his offense. There was very little turnaround time for that reason alone.

You seriously misrepresent the difference in talent. That team had an experienced OL that was comprised almost entirely of top recruits. You had three NFL RB's (Mason, Artis-Payne, Grant). At WR, you had an elite athlete that could stretch the field (Coates) and an elite athlete who was built like a RB who could play Malzahn's "screen" role (Louis). Both those guys were drafted into the NFL. They even had an under-utilized future NFL TE (Uzomah) and pulled in an absolute stud FB (Prosch) who also went on to the NFL.

The defense was a workman group, but even there we were sneaky-strong because we had a ton of experience - particularly in the Secondary and at DL. Gabe Wright, Angelo Blackson (4th round NFL pick), Nosa Eguae were "role" players but all were experienced SEC performers. You had an elite season out of Dee Ford (a 5th year Senior) and had the future-NFL 5-stars in Lawson, Mon Adams who contributed as well. Even Elijah Daniel contributed before flaming off the team.

The Secondary was stacked with guys who had all played together for YEARS. Chris Davis, Jonathan Mincy, Ryan Smith, Jermaine Whitehead, Robinson Therezie, Ryan White. None of these guys were elite NFL talents, but they were all Juniors/Seniors with tons of starts. And all of them were made better because you had an elite pass-rusher who abused offenses all season long (Ford).

That was a magical season complete with two of the most unlikely plays you'll ever see in back to back games. I mean, let's not forget that two miracle plays turned a 9-3 season into an 11-1 season.

Hugh Freeze is coming in after two straight coaches demolished the roster. Yes, the transfer portal helps, but you need to understand that we're going to start probably 4 completely new OL next season because the situation was that bad. WR is a not good, hence why they're looking to bring in 3 more transfers during this Spring window. The RB room could be promising, but this isn't 2013 lol. You have an entirely new staff on both sides of the ball who will be installing wildly different schemes.

And lets not start acting like 2 star Sammy Coates was considered a hot talent or that Ricardo Louis was a great WR.

Hah, so Coates doesn't count because he was a three star even though he was a solid pro player, but you are going to discount Louis too even though he was a top 150 prospect? Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth man.

Our 2010 class was ranked top 5, our 2011 class was ranked top 7, and our 2012 class was top 10. We had a ton of talent, Chizik just lost the team and we had crap coaching.

Preston Taumua will OV June 16th per Pink.

He's heard these past few weeks that Auburn's been a real contender

no one on this board was talking about them being NFL guys. At the time, Coates was stone hands and Louis ran into defenders and couldn't catch. You are using hindsight to make your argument, when at the time, we didnt know what we had. Similar to this year

and yet we fired our Head coach after he went 8-5 and 3-9. Gus salvaged our 13 class when he was hired and got a juco Qb named Nick Marshall to run his HUNH offense.

I am saying that Hugh is salvaging our classes and will having Auburn competing for the West this year.

I think I read where 5 of the 2021 signing class is still around. The rosters are nowhere near similar.

The floor this year can easily be 5 wins and that includes 3 rent a wins. And the floor is made of Cheetos. It can break.

Pink gives updates on 6 Auburn targets:

1. LB Bradley Shaw - AU, UGA, and ND are the top schools RN with currently scheduled OVs to UGA and ND and he will OV to AU later on and attend BCW.

2. OT Jac'Qawn McRoy - Pink predicts him to land at Oregon as AU's focus has turned to UR OT Reese Baker

3. WR Mario Craver - UF is his leader, but AU is recruiting him the hardest. He will OV sometime this fall, he preferably wants to visit for the IB.

4. LB DJ Barber - Auburn is the leader RN and he put in an RPM for him to AU, but Arkansas is the other team to watch for as he'll OV there in June. A decision could come before his Arkansas OV.

5. DL Jeremiah Beaman - Beaman says no team has pulled ahead of the other, but Pink believes if signing day was today Bama would be the pick, but AU is battling hard and he has a great relationship with Garrett.

6. RB Kevin Riley - Riley says it'll be tough to beat Bama but Auburn is squarely in the mix. Pink says if Bama puts on the full court press he'll probably end up there. It's too early to call, but Pink believes it'll be a tough battle for AU. He'll take an OV to Auburn

Yea the consensus in 2012 was that Chizik had no clue how to run Malzahn's offense. There was definitely more talent in 2013. Think about it. We replaced the QB and ended up playing in a national championship, versus here we're filling in most of the starting lineup with transfers. Even if the guys hadn't shown it yet in college, the 2012 team was stacked with 4-5 star talent due to ~top 10 recruiting classes going back the prior 5 years. I looked it up one time recently talking about the turnaround we need and our recruiting under Chizik was VERY good.

We've now swapped out the entire OL, the QB, much of the DL, linebackers, edge... the only position groups still largely intact are the secondary and RBs.

So we have basically improved across the board by processing poor talent and replacing them with highly coveted portal transfers with game experience and NFL potential

Some may haha - a lot of it is TBD. At a minimum a lot of the guys seem to be coming here to prove themselves in the SEC and get "better" NFL looks.
