One thing we have going for us this year that we won't have in the future is the rest of the league is unfamiliar with our schemes and tendencies, both for our players and our coaches. "The book" isn't out on us yet.

Championships are the goal but it takes more than one recruiting year.

2013 taught you nothing

eta: high school recruiting and portal recruiting could be considered as two separate recruiting cycles now, making the turnaround time much shorter for programs

2013 was an abberation but the talent was there.

Depth and talent are not there today.

Feel free to offer a ban bet.

2013 came after multiple top-rated recruiting classes by Chizik. He lost the team and player issues got him fired, but the team wasn't devoid of talent.

The roster right now is still simply building talent. You also can't expect all of these transfer portal additions to be massive hits.

Who do you think is a dud from our portal transfers? which ones stand out as meh players that we just took as a body filler?

How nice is it that we will actually have legit competition at both the guard positions? We are certainly a few elite prospects away from being legit competitors for the west, but Hugh and the staff sure have given us hope to be competitive next year.

I love the enthusiasm, and I am hoping for a National Championship this year myself, but what Gus came into and what Hugh came into are quite different. No depth, but hitting the marks on key personnel.

Well well well... Jang with a good take. We are in the reverse situation of 2013. In 2013 we were coming off of some awesome recruiting classes and hadn't had the 5 year period of no Oline recruiting.

We've made good strides in the portal but 2013 and 2023 are very very different rosters.

I am not siding with Chex but it is similar. Gus brought in and set up the key pieces to the 2013 team.
Plus his first class was a top 10 if not top 5 class. Something we have not seen since we fired him and may not see again for a while

It was just a unstoppable offense and one of the best Auburn has ever had.

The two are different but its not like there was a ton of offensive talent before Gus took over.

I agree we will surprise some, but it is a double edged sword.

We have a brand new coach and staff. As well as staff who are new to each other. We will field 40 new players, many of whom we will depend on for significant playing time. And EVERYBODY will be learning a new system.

Gonna be fun, and good for liquor sales to calm the nerves. Whole lot more fun than knowing you are gonna either see a boring game or get your brains kicked in.

I don’t have high expectations but I’m really excited for auburn football again and that’s a huge win to me.

I can see where if everything hits we could have a great year. 40ish new faces, new offense and defense, players working together for the first time in fall camp, and inevitable injuries to a relatively thin 2 deep are all reasons to be cautiously optimistic

I’m with Jonesy, we have positive momentum for the first time in what feels like 9 years, I barely even kept up last season until Caddy took over.

If this team stays healthy it could get to 9 wins maybe 10, but I’m content with 7 wins and looking competitive.

What? Are you talking about 2013? Cause he had a pretty good offensive roster when he took over then. Mason and Grant were two junior RB who made it to the pros, Sammie Coates and Uzomah were great, Louis was a top 150ish player, Quan Bray was a top 100 guy, Marcus Davis was a pretty solid frosh.

Our offensive line was stacked. Reese Dismukes, Robinson, Kozan, Avery Young/Patrick Miller were all immensely talented. Chad Slade wasn't as talented, but still a solid starting guard.

Freeze practically has nothing by comparison.

Lets not try to rewrite history here. Didnt we have the entire 2011 class either get arrested, transfer or get kicked off the team? then 2012 happened and our recruiting class suffered. So where was this magical talent that led us to 8-5 and 3-9 in the years leading up to 2013?

eta: we also had most of our top commits poached by Bama on signing day during that time frame. Foster, Liner, Kuonjo sp?, ect One commit had to close down their family business bc the money was too good from bama and they didnt want to have blow back on them. Forget the kids name, think he was a lb. Not to mention Yeldon getting paid off

etaa: And lets not start acting like 2 star Sammy Coates was considered a hot talent or that Ricardo Louis was a great WR. Serviceable, but not great. I think we were all shocked he went in the 4th
