I will never trust PM. I'd bet money.
PM is PM but he knows the team better than 99% of us. He talks candidly with the staff and players. He was spot on last fall camp when he said Jonathan Jones would be our best cover guy, and Dominic Walker wouldn't ever make it off the practice squad.
IMO staff knows what they have in Jovon so they're probably trying to give Barber one last go to see if he can be the guy.
Like one of you others said I'd be shocked if Jovon was our 3rd option come game 2 or 3

State of the Offense: Lashlee Breaks it Down
quote:
AUBURN – Rhett Lashlee has been Auburn's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons, as he returned to coach under his mentor, Gus Malzahn, when the new staff took over in December 2012. Under Lashlee's guidance, the Tigers' offense has produced the SEC's leading rusher two seasons in a row. But for the third time in as many years, Auburn entered preseason camp with a running back battle on its hands.
Lashlee has repeatedly expressed confidence in all the players competing for the job since the spring.
He touched on that position and much more in a post-practice interview Wednesday.
Following are his thoughts:
Receivers
Lashlee once again reiterated star wideout Duke Williams wasn't at practice. He also stressed Williams' return was in Malzahn's hands. But Lashlee did dive into talk of other receivers, including some position minutia. First up: Who is seeing reps at the X-spot?
"We've used a bunch of different guys. Ricardo a little bit. Melvin Ray, who's played there before. Darius Slayton, obviously is working there. Myron Burton is working there. So those are guys that have played that position before and are doing a nice job."
Are the X and Y positions interchangeable?
"Yeah, we interchange our guys a lot. So we do have kind of home positions. Once we get to the season (that will change). Spring for sure and early on in fall camp we mix and match a little. Some of our older, veteran guys like a Melvin Ray, a Marcus Davis, those guys that have been around, we'll move them more than others — Tony Stevens now going into his third year. Try to kind of keep the younger guys in one spot for a while, but then once we get into the season, everybody kind of finds a home spot. And then game to game, we just kind of game plan and move them where we need to."
Is Ricardo Louis ready to end his career on a high note?
“I’d say this: Ricardo is going to be a senior, and as long as Ricardo continues to bring the approach he’s bringing to practice right now, I feel very good about Ricardo. He’s practicing right now as good as he’s practiced since I’ve been here. We haven’t played anybody yet, so does that mean anything yet? No. But I know he’s gaining confidence. I know Jeremy is gaining confidence in him. I feel good about where Ric’s at and really all those guys.”
Where does junior Tony Stevens fit into the picture?
"Tony's having a really good camp. ... We've moved him around a little bit to try to get him on the field in probably fitted situations for him. That'll be something you see once we get going. But I think Tony is doing a nice job."
More on Stevens, who missed the A-Day game after fracturing his left foot in the final week of the spring
"Tony has been out there every practice. He's very healthy. As a matter of fact, specifically in the last two days, he's made as many plays — if not more — than any of our wideouts. He's having a really solid, steady camp."
Is Melvin Ray taking advantage of Williams’ absence?
“There’s no question. Melvin is going to play and he's going to play a lot this year. One, because we trust him. Two, he's productive. If you look at it, when he gets those opportunities over the last two years, albeit sparingly at times, he produces. He's not a flashy guy, but he's a productive guy. He'll help us win a lot of games, not just being on the field, but making plays this year. He's going to play regardless of who's out there.”
Running backs
Lashlee said Roc Thomas has a slight edge in the fight to become the starter. But he also gave some insight on the other three players trying to win the job.
"I tell you what, though, Peyton Barber has done an extremely nice job. You can just tell he's very comfortable. He's very confident. And then Jovon Robinson's continuing to come along. And then Kerryon Johnson has been very impressive for a true freshman."
More on the four running back candidates, beginning with Robinson
"I think (Jovon) knows what to do. He's just kind of slowly and steadily going about his business. I wouldn't read anything into it. He's been out there for every practice. He's doing a nice job. We won't know until we play in the Georgia Dome, because we've got two guys in Roc and Peyton with limited experience. We've got another guy with only junior college experience and another guy with only high school experience. So we're going to have good ideas, but you know, the Georgia Dome game and even the first couple of games, it'll work itself out. But we do feel like we have a good problem because all four of them can help us."
Quarterbacks
How has Jeremy Johnson looked since preseason camp kicked off?
“I think he's been really good on and off the field. Again, he's very confident. He's been vocal, he's led us, he's been our leader just like you'd want him to be, and really, he's performed well (with) probably the exception of one day. He probably had one day that he didn't throw his best, but he's human. Overall I've been pleased.”
Is Sean White definitely the backup? Or is Tyler Queen getting a chance to supplant him?
“There is always competition. We left spring with him being the backup and I would say nothing has happened right now to change that.”
More on White
“His first few days were a little shaky, but as of late, he’s been really good. Maybe he’s just a little rusty, but he’s thrown the ball well. He’s making good decisions and executing our offense well.”

Tight ends
On what he's seen thus far
"A lot of good things. Jalen Harris is doing a really, really good job as a true freshman. He's still got light years to go, obviously, but he's about 260 pounds, so he's big enough. He's not as big as he's going to be, but he's big enough. He's willing to stick his head in there and be physical and he's got good hands. So for a true freshman, I've been pleased. He'll find a way to help us this year.
"Chris Laye is better than he's been since he's been here, so he's continued to improve. That's a positive."
Is Harris ahead right now?
“I wouldn't say that anyone's ahead. We've had one scrimmage. I’d say that Chris Laye is improved and is doing a good job and I'd say that Jalen Harris has really impressed early on as a true freshman.”
Will they be asked to focus less on route-running this season due to their inexperience?
"Probably. You just never know. Pure tight ends, for us, have typically been more just blockers. But we usually have a guy who can do like 'Lutz' (Philip Lutzenkirchen) or C.J. (Uzomah); they can put their hand down, play in the backfield, flex out. Jalen will be that style of player. He'll get to where he can do multiple things. He's not just playing with his hand down right now. Once we get in the game planning for Louisville here soon, kind of what the game plan dictates, based on also what we think our personnel can do, may dictate that."
H-backs
How much does it help having Kamryn Pettway and Chandler Cox being versatile enough they might also be able to play tight end?
“It helps a lot. Two guys that don't have any experience, but we really think they fit really well for what we're doing at that position. So that takes a little bit of pressure off Jalen having to do both as much. Now, he's learning it all, but it lets him focus a little more on tight end early on, which has been good.”
Centers
How is the position looking one week into preseason camp?
“(Austin Golson) is doing really well. Again, he hasn’t been in a game, but he has been in a game in the SEC, just not as a center. I feel really comfortable with Austin right now. He just needs to continue to get reps and continue to get better and more consistent, because a guy who hasn’t played a position like that, the more reps he gets, the more, one, he gets consistent with execution and two, when (different) scenarios arise, he learns and gets better. He’s been really good.
“I tell you who has been really good is Xavier Dampeer. When you lose a guy like Reese (Dismukes), it makes you feel really good knowing that not only do you have one, but you think you have two guys you can win with at center. I feel that way right now about those two guys the way they’ve been in fall camp.”
Pace
Why does he believe the offense can go even faster despite lack of experience at many positions?
“Because that's our expectation. That's going to be dictated by how well we're executing. We're going to go at the same pace we've gone since I played in high school. Nothing really changes. We're playing in a little bit better league, I guess, than when I was in high school. … We didn't play these SEC guys week in and week out, so the defenses are a little better. We do some things a little differently because you have to, because of who you're playing. You're playing 11 NFL guys on the other side of the ball just about every week. (But those are the) expectations, that's what we expect and that's going to be how we play.”

Good mix of coach speak and little glimpses of reality. Although he didn't explicitly state it you can tell that Jalen Harris has surpassed Chris Laye already and Roc Thomas will be the first guy to take a carry in the Louisville game.
I really like Lashlee and I hope our offense comes together early on despite all the new parts. Getting Duke back today certainly helps ease those pains as we have a sure handed receiver that runs routes really really well. I look forward to seeing Duke and Melvin Ray out there a lot together.
If we can just get past Louisville without having a turnover party and shake the nerves then we'll be just fine.

Auburn is off today. But this morning, we will meet with all the position coaches for (likely) the only time this fall. So there's that.
Poor Craig.

O-line will gel by game 4, barring injuries. There is enough experience and talent along the line to do that. Gus will keep things fairly basic through the first few games, giving the line a chance to get in synch and in tune. If the line is working well by LSU, then watch out. If not, then....plan B or C. The talent is there, the coaching is there. There should be enough experience, and Gus and Rhett should be able to play call well enough to bring the unit along through the first few games. I simply don't see them frickin the pooch.

Also, anyone else feel like Melvin Ray is a better verison of Jaylon Denson? Both seem to be high quality blockers for WRs, both are big bodied guys and both aren't super flashy WRs. Ray just seems to have a little higher ceiling in the pass catching category.
May seem like a diss to some but pass blocking is a huge part of our offense obviously. Being an elite edge blocker likely gets you significant PT

Horton says Roc & Barber are 1A & 1B with Jovon 3rd.
Also said Jovon had the worst start of the four.
Then this.
Sounds like Robinson fricked up some off-field stuff and he'll sit because of it.
