I like Kelly. The state of FL is critical to our success, and he is known there. We have to keep the talent coming. It is the only way we will make gains on D.

Yeah, but this situation rests on Jay Jacobs. I'm usually not a token JJ basher, but the fact we gave Muschamp every bit of leverage after only 1 year at a position that needs some continuity to pay off is disheartening. Muschamp should have been locked down for at least 2 years. If he didn't except that, so be it, move on to the next on your list.
The truth of the matter is that Muschamp would never have returned to Auburn without this level of freedom in his contract.

I think Kelly definitely would be best option. Just hard to see him wanting to tie his future to our current situation. He is 1-2 years from a HC position if he continues this
If he has a legit year at AU, we are in this situation again too

He can double his money here. Also, Gus needs to get a young guy in and ready to take over when Kelly leaves (hypothetical of course).

Rumor has it Kelly told Gus no, but who knows wtf is going on in the AU AD.
Rumor is that Kelly wants more money and assurances in a contract and the door is not yet closed. I think he would be an excellent hire, and that has nothing to do with the fact that he is an alum.

But the fact there was no buyout after year 1 made him easy pickings. You're not going to change a defense in 1 fricking year. It was an atrocious contract, and the way Jay Jacobs proceeded screams desparation and short-sightedness. At the very least, a buyout would have deterred smaller schools (which we all thought might come after him), yet there was no protection for AU's program.
While all this is true, I believe, and it's been stated on the board before, Gus went all in on Muschamp. Gus expected that we'd be in Atlanta and beyond. And if that happened, who would have cared if Muschamp left after a season. We would have gotten what we needed from him.

If that is really what Gus believed then I am not sure how I feel about having someone so short sighted running our program.

I like what I'm reading about Jack Curtis (Georgia Southern).

quote:
Georgia Southern Eagles’ defense is playing intelligently with a relentless, “no-nonsense,” demeanor. The Eagles’ defense has recorded 10.5 sacks and 11 interceptions in five games making them the second in sacks and first in interceptions in the Sun Belt. The defensive coordinator running the show, Jack Curtis, is only in his second year as defensive coordinator.
quote:
What is your motto for the defense?
JC: It’s to play as hard as we can every down, during every series. We don’t only want to play with great effort; we want to play with great intelligence as well. The game of football has changed so much now; you have to play with great effort and great intelligence.
quote:
You coached six first-team All-Americans and nine players who were selected in the NFL draft. More than a dozen of your former players signed with NFL teams, including several who are on current rosters. Do you think this defense has the capability to add to that list?
JC: I would think so. We’ve got a few guys this year who I think are more than capable of getting a look from NFL scouts. It’s certainly fortunate to have great players around. You try to teach them the game to the best of your abilities but it really comes down to talent in the NFL. I want to put our guys in the best position to learn the game and let their talents take over. I’ve been fortunate enough over my career to have a number of those guys; they’re a lot of fun to coach.
From his bio

Curtis came to Georgia Southern after one season as the defensive coordinator at Central Missouri. Central Missouri posted a program-best 11 wins and finished the 2010 season with a No. 5 ranking, the highest in Mules’ history. Curtis joined UCM after a year on the staff at Memphis, where he coached the safeties and had responsibilities for the kickoff, punt and field goal block aspects of the Tigers’ special teams units.
After eight years on the defensive staff at Northwestern State University, including the last three as defensive coordinator, Curtis was offered the position of co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Arkansas State. Curtis took over a defense that had ranked 61st nationally in pass defense the year before and he helped the Red Wolves improve to 16th nationally in pass defense and 39th in total defense. In those eight seasons, the NSU defense produced 18 All-Sun Belt honorees and two Sun Belt Defensive Players of the Year
quote:
During Curtis’ tenure at Arkansas State, the Red Wolves ranked in the top 30 in the country in pass defense four times and in the top 50 in total defense five times. In 2007, ASU was the leading defensive unit in the Sun Belt Conference. The next year, ASU was ranked 30th nationally in rush defense and in the top 50 in both scoring and total defense in Curtis’ final season with the program.

If I was potentially walking into a minefield, I'd want full control, a big raise and guarantees that a dumpster fire doesn't leav eme out to dry

Not to be a downer in all of this, but are we gonna allow the next hire to bring in some of his guys or have any sort of input on the coaches he works with? I'm just not sure what to expect if we bring in a guy and then tie his hands with a guy like Garner, who apparently has a secure position despite very mediocre results.

Curtis looks very intriguing as a candidate. Is he an option being considered or someone that you have brought to our attention? I admit I did not read the posts behind yours.

As long as Garner is DL coach, it won't matter who we bring in as DC. You have to stop the run first, and our team hasn't really been able to do that since Garner's been here. Every other position improved this season except defensive line.

the DL played better down the stretch as well... Granted, a lot of that has to do with Lawson coming back. Devaroe Lawrence played well the last half of the season.
Will be interesting to see why that group does in the bowl game... Memphis doesn't give up a lot of sacks even though they throw it a bunch.

Since we have decided to completely abandon the western and northern halfs of our traditional recruiting ground, I agree.

Any chance LT stays after not being promoted?

I can't see him leaving. I doubt anyone wants to try him out at DC
