Napier is my guy.

Venables and Elliott would be fine if he falls through, I guess.

I think I'm good with Napier. Not without risk, but he's a guy who turned down two other SEC jobs (allegedly) and was likely to get looks at Big 6 schools (UT, LSU).

How awful would it be if he turned us down too... the melt would be horrendous.

A widely-trusted poster on another board has repeatedly said a hold up for Napier is that he viewed the Alabama job as his when Saban left and he knows he'll only get one big move.

Which to me is nuts that he'd think that. But if he had good reason to think that, and he comes to AU, that can't be a bad thing...

I don't think you can worry about that stuff when trying to make this kind of hire. If he comes here and does well enough to be considered a replacement for Saban, that would mean our program would be in much better shape than it is now.

Ok lets stop the madness.

You already got Napier coming to Auburn and then Alabama stealing him from us when Saban retires.

Oh the Madness !!

How in the hell does Napier view himself as the Saban replacement? He will definitely have some competition with Sark, Dabo, and pretty much any other coach in the country.

They also say Mullen's wife like players too much and Sark had an agreement to be HCIW at Bama.

Easy.

You just lie to a hot assistant and tell them "you are my replacement for when I retire" or something along those lines.

IMHO, the only way Napier would turn AU down for a shot at Bama down the road would be if Saban himself told him he would recommend him for the job.

Short of that, there are way too many variables in play to take that chance. I wouldn’t put it past the Bama GOBN to veto hiring a HC away from AU.

That said, the fact that Marshall now has him as the frontrunner worries me - except that he usually gets it right moments before everyone else knows it, so maybe there’s an announcement later today.

I dont think that's true at all. For one, Napier is no where near a "lock" right now. He could be that good, but no one knows. Theres certainly a risk as with any coach. But I think Auburn should take the risk.

Second, this "Saban's replacement" thing has been thrown out for Cristobal, Sarkisian, and now Napier.

Apparently JGT posted that he thinks that Cristobal is still in play.

Also, some talk that Napier blew the committee away - which would explain the rise in that camp this morning.

Jake Crain has been stating the same even since he agreed to the extension.
