Mike Leach? FOH

Over Gus, hell yeah. Leach wouldn't be a long term solution obviously, but Saban is going to be around at least another 5 seasons anyway and for at least 3 of those years while we still have our defensive talent things would be really fun.

Imagine our WRs in a Leach offense. In particular Seth Williams, Schwartz, and Eli Stove when he's healthy. Leach as coach would probably lock down George Pickens and maybe we could even get another look from Haslewood.

You can be pretty confident there will be good QB play under Leach. Stidham's skill set actually fits Leach's offense, but if Stidham is too far gone mentally then we would probably be the top grad transfer destination for QBs, and honestly Cord Sandberg or Bo Nix could probably do well in Leach offense too.

Two biggest weaknesses on offense rn are OL and RB, his offense would be a good way to quickly mask those weaknesses until they can be addressed. Lots of quick passes, and we don't have an elite RB rn but Shaun Shivers skill set would be incredibly dangerous on draws in that offense and cause defenses to have to play on their heels.

Texas Tech and Washington State don't have near the resources that Auburn have. Those are two of the hardest P5 schools to recruit to in the country. Hire a good DC and assistants who are elite recruiters, and let Leach focus on coaching... who knows what Mike Leach could accomplish somewhere like Auburn. The skeptisim is well deserved, but I think the potential is huge over a 5 year period

ETA:

All that long winded typing to say, Leach is still my 4th or 5th choice. Bill Clark 4 lyfe.

Leach has won more games at Washington State since 2015 than Gus has at Auburn. This is a washington State program that had not had a winning record since 2003

I agree with all of those. Just some more to consider

Seth Littrell - North Texas (May be too big of a jump tho)
Mike Norvell - Memphis
Major Applewhite - Houston
Matt Wells - Utah State (Again, a pretty big jump)

Again, the only reason Clark keeps getting brought up is because of his connection to Prattville and coach at a school in state. I really don't think he's anywhere close to being on the level that makes him a realistic candidate.

Leech is washed up. His only success as a coordinator happened so long ago. He hasn't had any success lately or even shown flashes of it.

If we hired Muschamp I would be so irritated that I would really quit caring about football. Besides hiring lashlee, that would be the most Auburn thing ever to do.

WTF? Are you sure you know who Mike Leach is? His turnaround at Wazzu is one of the most impressive stories in CFB

Mike Leach won 7 conf games last year. Wazzu only won 7 conf games in 5 years before Leach

Put it this way, Leach is has done what Hugh Freeze did at Ole Miss......

Except Leach did it with a shittier program, didn't pay recruits/hookers and had significantly less resources

His offense isn’t conducive to SEC football. Pass.

That's an important point about Leach...it's at Wazzu.

There is a level of professionalism, strategy, etc...to being consistently successful in the SEC that Auburn must find. The idea we are going to hire a guy who just play calls our way out of 8 win averages is naive. That might have worked in 90's or with a quirky new scheme like Gus created but in the end we need someone who knows how to build a program like Coach Dye brought in the 80's. Coach Dye understood every aspect of what it takes to win at this level against our competition...he worked from day 1 to accomplish that goal. Those teams weren't perfect, but the system in place was on par with what our main competitiors had at the time and we aren't on par today.

Based on what exactly?

How air raid concepts permeate all of CFB/NFL? Or how successful Leach/Leach coaching tree has been?

Agreed.

I don't want Leach, just saying anyone who suggest he isn't a great coach is making themselves look stupid

Yep, former Oklahoma OC, Texas Tech HC, and now HC at WSU. Comparing his work at WSU to Freeze's at Ole Miss doesn't really make it that much more impressive. I know WSU is not the easiest place to be successful at, but all he has shown is he can rebuild a program to be competent—not superior. His records indicate that too. I think he's a good coach, not a great coach.

TTU:
7-6
7-5
9-5
8-5
8-4
9-3
8-5
9-4
11-2
9-4
8-5
5-7

WSU:
3-9
6-7
3-9
9-4
8-5
9-4

This is stupid, Washington St is not a program anyone can build up to be superior.

They lost Tony Bennett as bball
coach only because they gave him no financial support for basic things

Oh man. This coaching search, when we have one, is going to be one for the ages with how many dumb fricks have penetrated this board. RIP good discussion.

I am fragile. I may quit CFB if we fire Gus and end up with someone like Bill Clark.

Thinking Leach would be a good hire at Auburn is laughable. It's that simple. I'd enjoy the press conferences though, at least until he started getting political. The noise he'd make at a program with our spotlight would be horrifying.

Agree, he's been outstanding. It is worrisome that we might lose him if we get a new coach who brings in all his own guys. TWill has become one of my favorite Auburn guys of all time.
