The board had a damn meltdown when Willis didn't complete the stupid 2 point play every convinced and collectively decided he sucks. But is it his fault he sucks? The games he should have been developed in were too close to for him to play last season. Screen Pass Gus got butthurt over the turnover and played the old man vs ASU. So how was Malik to develop?

Maybe he just sucks? And would suck no matter where he played college ball

Maybe so.. I think OP's point is to pick a side. Either Gus sucks at developing QB's or the QB's he has signed all suck.

Can't logically conclude that Malik Willis would suck anywhere if he has only played QB at Auburn, where this board says the HC actively destroys QB's.

Malik Willis was a 3 star recruit (athlete) and was not heavily recruited. Only other major offers Virginia Tech (Flipped from them to us), Georgia Tech and Air Force. Lets see how he does in the spring.

In all honesty most QB's need game reps to improve...White got better, Nick got better, etc...the game moves to quickly for Stidham a common issue for talented QB's who move up in competition.

Probably Gus' biggest issue is his inability to put average teams away and then run his full offense with the back ups in the game.

I like Willis but I've seen nothing that would give me confidence he can be the starter. If Gus could develop QB's I feel like Willis would've done better with his opportunities when he was in there like the Safety, 2pt conversions etc..

No, not really. I don't see how anyone can judge him or any of the backups yet.

Its laughable at your attempt to play the white knight role.

Both can be true. Gus sucks at developing Qbs and Malik sucks as a Qb.

This... plus he should be playing safety.

We do not have the staff in place to cherry pick 2* and 3* QBs and turn them into Russel Wilsons.

Therefore we need to recruit high caliber QBs that can come in day one and play ala Bo Nix

This staff needs to stay away from projects

I'm not sure if the problem is his development of them, or if it is because he is recruiting guys that would suck no matter what. If Bo Nix comes in and sucks that would probably tell us that he just can't coach

Gus isn't and hasn't been the QB coach for some time. He meddles but his meddling is more of a gameday thing which is why we sometimes look so disorganized. He has enough issues like the aforementioned meddling, roster management and evaluating talent that we shouldn't have to make up new reasons to shite on him.

There are a couple factors that will make me wait and see with, while not counting him out.

His freshman season highlights and VA tech has hit on their qb recruit evaluation.

So I believe it’s Gus not Malik

Anybody thinking they have enough data to think Malik sucks is just wrong. Not guaranteeing he will be good by any means but to suggest he sucks based on a couple of plays in blowouts is deranged.

Willis has barely played.

In two years he has 25 rush attempts at 10.3 yards per carry. He’s also 10/13 passing, 4.9 yards per attempt. All of this was done in 7 games in 2017 and 4 games this year. All done running a read option offense that receives little attention in practice and is used only situationally in the game plan.

Nobody here knows how he’ll play in the future. If you think you know then you’re fooling yourself.

I'm not a Gus apologist, but Malik should be able to make the correct decision running a simple zone read regardless of the coaching he receives. He appears to be guessing. That's the biggest issue I have with him.

If I’m wrong I won’t admit it, so if I am, you be sure to remind me and I’ll eat this crow. I’ve yet to see Malik slow down enough to make the right read on the ZR much less go through pass progressions to make me think he can improve at a much higher pace than what he’s improved so far. He’s balls to the wall every snap like he’s already got the plan of what’s going to happen before the snap is even delivered. We can’t do that against SEC.

It takes real game experience to master a read option and he just doesn’t get the opportunities necessary to be great at it. He’s running Stidham’s offense because he’s the only backup. Our offense isn’t practicing two offenses every week

And I don’t think Gus going back to it anyway so I’m not sure any of this matters.

His snaps are primarily situational plays. I would imagine that he’s being told what to do. I’d guess that a lot of the plays that we think are reads aren’t actually reads. They’re “fake the handoff and find a hole” plays.
