Why is Auburn likely to go 7-5?

Because GusShortBus has went:

12-2
8-5
7-6
8-5
10-3

The mode is a good indication of what will likely happen (8-5). His outliers are this year and his first. In short, Auburn made an 8-5 coach one of the highest paid in the country.

That is an awful way to analyze statistics. Literally meaningless.

I was melting pretty bad Saturday and drunk a shite, but the market is dictating salaries right now. Should Mullen be paid more than Gus? I'd argue no given the fact that Gus and Auburn together are reaching Atlanta, and Mullen isn't. I think we'll be fine on defense next year but RB is really worrying me.

So 2 data points are considered outliers in a 5 data point set?

I'm still kinda salty after Saturday's game, but I gotta lay most of that on lack of execution, not coaching. Hell, if Stidham doesn't fumble near the goal line & we go up either 10-0 or 14-0, we might've gotten into UGA's heads early, and the momentum alone could've carried us to a W.

The only thing I might say was a coaching gaffe was the series where Stidham got sacked on the 50 on 3rd down. Points were at a premium, and I thought we should've been working to get into FG range first & foremost, as opposed to trying to chuck it downfield. If we got into FG range, then sure, take some shots then...

We got Gus now, so whether we like it or not, we gotta rally behind him & the team. Hopefully he'll reflect on this season and come out swinging next year...

All this. People don't want to hear the truth though. He is more likely to go 7-5 again next year instead of another 10+ win season. Many schools in the SEC upgraded their coaches this year. Auburn decided to give its lame duck coach a raise and extension. Should have been let go after the thUGA game last year, before the coaching change extravaganza this year.

I would have felt better with a win in the SECCG.

The two losses this year in the regular season are directly the result of decision made by Gus Malzahn. But so were the two wins over #1 teams.

I like the idea if stability and the direction of the program. But damn we need to change some things to develop depth. Our 1s go down and we are fricked.

I feel like Gus has deficiencies that the entire coaching staff is able to overcome

Gus is getting all of the attention right now but it’s my belief that Steele, Lindsey, Hand (for better or for worse), Twill, etc., made our team what it was this season as much as Gus did.

Next year’s schedule lines up well for us despite UGA/BAMA on the road late.

45-21 in 5 seasons... Comes out to 8.5 to 4.2... Tubs did not have a Saban to contend with.

BOWDEN:47-17-1 (73.1%)
DYE: 99-39-4 (71.1 %)
MALZAHN 45-21 (68.2 %)
TUBS: 85-40 (68%)
JORDAN: 175-83-7 (67.4%)
BARFIELD: 27-27-1 (50%)

This ignores the overall state of the program.

2014 8-5 was a result of prior D recruiting failures dating all the way back to 2011. bama, uga, Clemson and LSU simply whipped us on key targets.

2015 Gus deserves some responsibility for this by missing on JJ, but Champs D was never at a championship level thanks to the issue mentioned in 2014. We lost Lawson and competing for a championship went with him.

2016 Gus continues to have a QB problem. Not sure why we passed on the VA Tech kid if we did, but I suspect he passed on us. Injuries prevented this from being a 9 maybe a 10 win team in spite of the QB issue. D recruiting has returned to a championship level and finally is showing.

2017 The depth on D has been rebuilt. Even with loses next year we won't look like 2014 again. The O has real potential if we keep the skill people in tact. The OL is concerning, but they were concerning all season. In 2018 what we lack in experience will made up for by being far more athletic. I expect it to be a work in progress, but hopefully they will have experience skill people to help them along.

Your model ignores the growth of the program. IMO Auburn historically is an 8 win program. IMO Gus has an opportunity to change that for us.

Remember Nick Saban was 34-24-1 at Michigan State with a 58.5% winning record after 5 years.

Stability is very important...

I don't think we get to even 7-5 this year. Looking like it'll be 6-6.

Nick Saban didn't become "Nick Saban" until Alabama. Even at LSU, he wasn't that coach.

All Auburn has to do to get to 10 wins is get 2 of 3 from the LSU bracket and 2 from the top tier teams. If you get 2 of 3 from LSU/A&M/MSU then you will likely get at least 2 from the top tier. That makes 10 wins.

We were all so innocent and full of hope back in December.
