Another good article on Chizik's "retirement" from coaching.

https://collegefootball.ap.org/article/chiziks-choice-family-over-football-after-2-years-away

quote:

Gene Chizik was walking out to practice last August when he noticed the overstuffed cars being unloaded by wide-eyed teenagers and their parents. The freshmen were moving into the dorms at the University of North Carolina.

That's when it hit him: His twin daughters would be doing the same thing at Auburn soon and he would not be there.

"It was tough," Chizik said. "I remember going out to practice and just being out of sorts a little bit because I was just thinking to myself: Holy cow, I'm not there to help. Most parents are going to help their kids move to college."

After two years of living and working in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, while his wife and three children were in Auburn, Alabama, Chizik quit his job and returned home to be a full-time dad and husband.

Too crazy idea of an idea to move your family to your new job like most Americans.

He didn't want to pull his kids out of school right when they were getting ready to finish up.

If you are able to allow your kids to finish out where they are and with their friends you do.

That type of thinking is part of why he was such an average/below average head coach. He wasn't driven like the great ones are or even the above average ones are...like it or not to be successful at the highest levels people typically have to be pretty selfish.

Good for Chiz. he also has the money to make that an option. Goddam JJ has been paying him for years.

Surprise his girls are going to college at Auburn? Thought his family would have
Been happy to leave Auburn considering Chiz got a raw deal

We never gave him the credit he deserved for the 2010 championship and Gus left him a dumpster fire on offense in 2012. The off the field stuff was an issue and I think it all just snowballed on him.

Hope he's eventually welcomed back the way Tuberville has been

All of that was his fault, and he can thank Cam and Gus for 2010

Yup. Chiz quit his job to be with his daughters. I'm sure they are lovely, sweet, well grounded young women.

Meanwhile in Tuscaloosa, Kristen Saban beat her sorority sister so bad that cosmetic surgery was required all because she didn't like a drunken facebook status

Gus's subsequent offensive performances and his inability to seal the deal in Pasedena leads me to think we overstated his role.

Don't be an idiot, the way Gene held it together under so much scrutiny was unbelievable. He did exactly what he needed to do to win a championship, not many coaches could've done that in 2010 with the press and NCAA constantly breathing down his neck.

Great amount of respect for Chizik. Also speaks highly of Auburn as a place that families love to plant their roots.

Makes me wonder why he even took it. I mean, Auburn was still paying him. People move their families for jobs all the fricking time. I don't see what the big deal is?

Auburn is a fantastic place to raise a family - regardless of your love/affiliation with the school. Both Tubbs and Chizik's kids and families hung around. My wife told me yesterday that Southern Living listed Auburn as a Top 10 best city in the South to live. Reasonable cost of living, good education, and close to Atlanta/Birmingham. Hard to uproot out of that
