Warning - long post incoming...

I second some of those already suggested then will make a few comments on Dec 2, 1989.

1989 Florida - was at this game. Shane Wasden in the back corner of the end zone in what was a relatively rare big night game (right before Halloween I think) and was one of the top 20 loudest moments in JH history (and I'm gonna name a few others in games I'm seconding here)

Florida 93 and 94 - was at both of these too. The 98 yard pick six by Calvin Jackson when Spurrier was threatening to blow us out was also a top 20 loudest moment IMO. Man that play changing the entire season and really the trajectory of the program for several years. Without that play I think we lose at least 3 games in 93 and 4 in 94.

1994 and 2006 LSU games. Was also at these two and the 2006 game was the most intense non-IB I have ever attended.

2001 Florida

1984 FSU - maybe the most entertaining and crazy AU game ever. And that is saying a LOT.

1990 FSU - this one is often overlooked, but it is my second favorite AU game I have attended (more on that later) and it was an inflection point for the program, so I'm gonna ramble a bit about it. We were coming off 3 straight SEC championships and top 10 finishes and both us and FSU were undefeated (though we had a come from behind tie in Knoxville) and us and FSU were considered strong national championship contenders. So, the buildup to the game was MASSIVE and it was billed as a national title eliminator game. And it was a night game at JH. And we had a very intense rivalry with FSU at the time, had not beaten them since 85. And they were our only loss in 1987 AND we were FURIOUS with them for the 1989 Sugar Bowl when a horrific pass interference no call at the end of the game on the goal line on Freddy Wegan robbed us of the win. I still remeember the ABC commentator saying "people at Auburn are going to be talking about this one for a long time" referring to the blown call.

Anyway, the game was at night and JH was ROCKING and going apeshit from start to finish. Everytime the FSU band started that chop chant garbage, the stadium erupted and drowned it out entirely and the AU band would start playing as well. That was the second loudest AU game I've ever been to and I've been to at least 150. FSU was a lot better than us. But we sniffed out a fumble rooskie and on 4th down in a tie game with a minute left on about our 40, Ricky Sutton sacked Casey Weldon for literally about a 25 yard loss. It was kinda like the kick six. In one play in the final minute of a tie game it went from FSU going for the winning score to us going for the winning score. After Wynn Lyle (I think) kicked the winning fg (barely) we stayed in the stadium for a half hour doing the FSU war chant to really rub it in.

As for that game being an inflection point, we then went down to Florida and Spurrier destroyed us and sent us into a tail spin for the rest of the season. After being a top ten fixture for years under Dye, we never were again under Dye. I think after December 2, 1989 the program was not a hungry program again until the 1992 IB becuase it was Dye's last game. We gave a FAR superior Bama team all they could handle at legion field that day too even though the final score did not refelect it thanks to an Antonio Langham pick in the 4th.

Now, December 2, 1989 - to say what motivated me to make an account (again) and post...

I sat in Section 9, row 28, seat 11. I still have the oversized ticket stub and gameday program.

My grandfather left north alabama about 5am to stop by my parents house in B'ham for us to all head to AU. Grandfather was the first of a dozen AU alums now spanning 4 generations and we have had season tickets since the 1950s.

The buildup to the game and then the gameday atmosphere was everything that people have tried to articulate over the years. It was a one time thing that has never been equaled in any sporting event in any sport in U.S. history IMO. Becuase it meant so much for so many generations of Aubies and had been such a long time coming.

Tiger Walk was UNREAL and quite frankly dangerous. I am not ashamed to admit I got scared in the middle of it and wanted out of it and to find a "safe space". That crowd was a heaving surging mass in a nearly out of control frenzy. It was more jammed packed shoulder to shoulder than any tiger walk ever and many people were in a near apoplectic state of excitement and desire, but also border line rage, some with tears in the eyes of many people as Dye once said. It was not safe. And I will admit the statement about the fear of losing outweighing the joy of winning was how I felt. Dye mentioned sveral players hyperventilating including James Joseph when they got into the locker room from Tiger Walk and I believe it. The emotion of that Tiger Walk was surreal.

As for the game, the orange and blue haze from the shakers was also surreal. Looking up from the stadium it was changing the color of the sky right above the stadium because everyone was shaking those old paper shakers so hard orange and blue particles of paint were rising up above the stands. And that was before the game even started.

Last two things I most remember about that game were the play when Alexander Wright caught the long pass down the student sideline on about 3rd and 5 on the opening drive, the stadium exploded. I remember I pulled some sort of muscle in my side screaming so loud that hurt for days after. That has never happened before or since, lol.

Last thing as somewhat noted, the last 5 minutes of that game were an enternity. All of us just wanted the game to end. For me the sense of relief when that game ended far outweighed the happiness of the win for me. Only time I have ever felt that way after a big game, but when it ended, I mostly just felt relief and was emotionally exhausted.

Here is how Ivan Maisel, who was covering the game for ESPN, described that Tiger Walk:

quote:

I have never covered a riot. I have never covered the police beat. The mayhem I witness is contained between the white lines.

I have covered the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals and the Final Four. I have covered the Olympics, Summer and Winter; the Opens, U.S. and British; the Bowls, Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, Orange, Gator, and GMAC.

I have covered nearly every major college football rivalry. And on nearly 90 campuses, from Hawaii to Boston College, Washington to Miami; in six different countries, from Russia to Texas (It's Like a Whole Other Country), only once have I genuinely feared for my safety.

That was at Tiger Walk in 1989.

The Auburn fans roared, their eyes glazed with a mixture of fervor, pride, passion, and perhaps a touch of the Jack Daniels. We were five or six deep and couldn't get any closer to the street. We were also hemmed in, and didn't have the zeal-fueled adrenaline to ward off the elbows and other parts of the bouncing, heaving, deafening masses. I no longer had any interest in taking notes, which was just as well, because the noise and the lack of space made it impossible. My own adrenaline kicked in, and I worked my way into open space.

"You never will see that commotion again," Housel says. "The Children of Israel entered the Promised Land for the first time only once."

Was at this game. Cemented my decision to go to Auburn. My brother and I weren't even going to the game. We were at a buddy's tailgate in their RV. Some guy that we've never seen before (or since) came in and asked if we were going to the game. We told him we were just there to hang out. 30 mins before kickoff, he comes back in and hands us two tickets to the game and tells us to have a good time.

I often wonder if that guy knows he changed the lives of two young men that day. I'd love to meet him and thank him for his kindness.

Well, I never had a choice. I was taken to my first AU game a couple of months before I turned 3 years old and in my family everyone goes to Auburn, period end of discussion, lol.

That is pretty cool and crazy. Those tickets were SOOO hard to get. I still remember when my grandfather got the family season tickets for the game. They were mailed seperate from the rest of the season tickets (it was a massive oversized ticket 5x larger than normal if you remember). The family members going to the game went to his house (2 hour drive for me and my parents) that summer when the tickets arrived. He opened up the envelope and gave each of us our ticket. It was that big of a deal.

I was in the student section. I can remember screaming my head off, but it was so loud around me, I couldn't tell if I was making any noise. Had to be top 5 loudest games in JHS.

Also, a great game. I was a freshman at AU and grew up in FL, so a special hatred for FSU. Most of my friends went there. It was the second night game of the season, but the first was the TN tie, which was exciting, but sucked.

We were on the front row end zone, student section, kinda where the ROTC cadets sit now. I think Amp Lee was the FSU kick returner and he got into it with us all game long. Really electric atmosphere and we stayed in JHS doing the FSU chant for at least an hour after.

Two College Football Teams Troll Each Other

Honestly think this is worse than the 3-2 Starkville game. Accuse me of recency bias all you want but this game was just hilariously awful. The worst thing about the Starkville game was the score. AU-Mizzou 2022 was two teams trying to hand each other the game for the last 20 minutes.

I'd like to go back and watch highlights from 2010 and 2013.
I was drinking a LOT back then and unfortunately don't remember a lot of details.

I was so pissed at Missouri after that game. That was some unnecessary Jordan-Hare magic we spent.

It ended up working out fine because Harsin still got fired.

In my day, we always wore a sport coat to the games so we had a place to keep a pocket flask.

I'll just take a guess of the top 10 loudest games in JH history, all of which I was at EXCEPT the Kick Six

Dec 2nd, 1989
Florida 93
LSU 04
LSU 06
LSU 08 (we lost this one byt damn it was loud)
FL 06
FSU 90
Kick Six
Bama 93
LSU 94

The two loudest away games I have ever been to were:

1995 at LSU - the "Bring Back the Magic Game". We were #5 and LSU had sucked for several years. LSU came out in white jerseys for a home night game for the first time in over a dozen years. Tiger Stadium went berserk and kept going berserk the whole game and they barely beat us. Mostly becuase of the bullshite sack fumble on our own 10 yard line when a fan blew a whistle and everyone stopped except for an LSU dlineman who smashed Patrick Nix.

1994 FL. We won, but damn the Swamp was LOUD that day.

Missed this game. Stayed in the apartment with future Mrs Aubie Spr96 because it was raining that day I believe. She was pissed when we won.

Yeah, it rained off and on.

I'll tell you the game I was pissed about missing was Florida in 2001. I was living in south Florida but got a couple of tickets for myself and the girl I was dating. She did not want to go but I talked her into it. But then we got in a fight and I said screw it and sold the tickets.

After we won I let her know how pissed I was. We did not last long after that, lol.

I have been to a lot of games. There is no explanation for how that moment felt. If you were not there, I cant explain it to you.

I was sitting in my seats directly behind a x-Auburn quarterback who I have been sitting behind for years who is very quiet and he lost his fricking mind.

I was in the student section and honestly too stunned to rush the field. Just sat there basking in it for an hour

Same here.
But damn I couldn’t imagine dressing like that now for an Auburn game. Especially one in September

Honestly I’m not sure I’ve ever watched an Auburn game sober until 2019. I picked a hell of a time to quit

Sitting in my season seats with my family. When they sent Chris Davis back to the endzone my mother said, "he's gonna run it back". The rest was history

it was so surreal. All I couldnt think about was dont go out of bounds and ffs Therezie dont tackle him! On field was crazy. Everyone beaming with pure joy. I took some of the 50 yard line sod and grew it

I gotcha and I follow. It is one of my greatest regrets in life (not being there).

I have an idea though.

And I'll tell you my reaction.

Dropped down on my hands and knees just sorta mumbling oh my god, omfg. Then sorta rolled over on the floor closed my eyes for a few seconds, not sure what I was even thinking or doing. I guess sorta thinking that did happen. We did win.

Then I went beserk. Screaming all kinds of things running around, and some not so nice. Lots of war fricking eagles, how bout them Tigers, glory glory to ole Auburn... but also a lot of who is your daddy alabamaa, frick you bama, then about 4 more who is your GDMF daddy to no one in particular. Got ahold of myself at some point, mostly because of the thought someone is going to call the police and I'm going to be arrested if I don't calm down.
