I'm baffled that people feel the need to contunously attack a college player. A pro who's getting paid 6 or 7 figures I can understand... but he's not getting a dime, outside of a free education.

He'd do good to lay off the boards, though... nothing good can come of it for a player (or parent in Jake's case), even if he were to play better this year. Once people turn on you, their opinions aren't likely to change... dude could win the butkus this year and people would b*tch 'where has this been?'

I completely agree. If a guy is not playing good, just say he's not playing good and move on. People that pile on are pussies that can anonymously get away with it on the internet.

And it's best that these kids just stay off message boards in general because those types of people aren't going to go away.

Jake Holland, wonder if they read this board.

"Then the injuries started. And soon the criticism started, too. Holland became a favorite target of anonymous message board critics. The criticism reached a fever pitch as Auburn’s defense collapsed down the stretch en route to a 3-9 record last season, and it hasn’t stopped yet. Some of the criticism has been painfully personal."

He probably knows the criticisms very well through second hand. They are on every Auburn board, not just this one and his dad is a member on at least 2 Auburn sites.

Trust me, people remind him of it every day. I told a story about last year when a couple days before a game some players asked him while hanging out "Jake, how many tackles you going to miss this week bro?"

So you are anonymously criticizing on a message board those who anonymously criticize on a message board?

guys, whatever justification you guys use for ripping a player is fine -- be it free education or the fact that you bought a ticket... doesnt mean I necessarily agree with it, but that's your choice.

Now coaches, I have no problem with... what those auburn coaches did last year was boarderline criminal... I wonder if they accepted their paychecks with a straight face every week.

A lot of these kids want to be stars, go to the league and absolutely bask in the adoration Auburn students give them. THey are superstars here on Auburn's campus. The price of being a superstar is that their actions are scrutinized heavily. If they can't stand the heat they went to the wrong kitchen. There are plenty of high quality programs that don't scrutinize/follow every play like SEC fans do. This is what the players asked for and knew, it is their fault if they overestimate their ability

Now saying things are borderline criminal is a sore subject with me. I have a huge beef with people believing that because they feel wronged or slighted someone ought to go to jail. Chizik & Co may be shitty coaches but I sincerely doubt he walked into work every day with the intention of drving us into the ground. If he tried to the best of his ability and within the details of his contract to win, there is nothing even bordering on criminal and his actions.

It would be AUburn's fault for hiring a shitty coach, not Gene's fault for being one

What justification was I using? I for one just agreed with most of what you said. I also laid out the facts of why it happens. You can post about injustice all you want, but message boards will be full of people who feel they can bitch, complain, and critique about anything and everything they want to. You may have misinterpreted what I said. I don't agree with bashing a player over and over.

I don't see an issue with people discussing bad technique and calling attention to poor play. If you feel you are free from doing that than good for you. I would make a wager that should someone do research you can find some of the same in your history, and mine for that matter.

It sounds like it was in a joking tone. On our HS team, we would rag on our QB every single day, the chemistry was fine.

Lulz at you guys claiming we can't call a shitty player shitty. They knew before accepting the scholly to AU that we have a crazy fanbase. If he didnt want the pressure of playing MLB at AU, he should've went to South Alabama or UAB.

I can say or believe whatever the frick I choose to. Just as you can. Outside of this discussion you haven't heard me ever or rarely tell anyone to layoff, because that is your prerogative to be assholes just as it is mine.

I have and always will be against booing a college or hs player.

Talking about how a player performs on a fan message board is mostly acceptable to me. I agree that it can go too far and get too personal though. Players really shouldn't be reading this crap.

Ah. Given the seriousness of our discussion on fans criticizing players on message boards I thought GC through his story was saying there were those issues on the team also. My mistake.

You can say whatever you want to. My point is that when it goes beyond saying this guy is playing bad football, and people pile on and make it personal, it's just crass and lacks any kind of taste, imo. But, you're free to say whatever you want to say anonymously. And again, they don't need to be reading message boards anyway. Assholes are always gonna be there.

No they don't. They get sold a bill of family and togetherness, etc. They don't get sold a bill of, 'if you play like crap, you're gonna get trashed on the internet by people that would most likely not say the same thing to your face.'

I was just pointing out that Jake Holland got reminded all the time about his play when if he didn't read a message board.

Unless there is a reason to talk about their character (typically positive) Itry to only talk about their performance. I am not judging then as people when I shite talk their performance. Being JClowney or Jake Holland on the field doesn't change my opinion of them. As long as they aren't Manziel or thugs off the field the only things I say about them are positive

You would almost want to get ragged by your buddies on the embarrassing plays. If they started praising you for good effort on a sh1tty play, it often would mean you turned the corner from just fricking up to being really sh1tty.

Message boards--I could see where it would be tough to read hundreds of people rooting for you to lose your job.

Completely agree. Especially with the booing part. I know people say they are booing the coaches, but those players don't know that. These are 19 and 20 year old kids.

Oh, I agree on the personal attacks. But saying Holland is the worst MLB AU has had in 30 years is the truth. Don't care if he, or his family gets their feelings hurt.

Yes he did. Jason Campbell received the same criticism prior to his senior year.
