I’m good with your argument and have nothing to prove to me. I am also not a huge fan of NIL, but I have a nephew who is earning NIL. He is actually going out to do things and does advertising on his social media. Not just being given money. Changed my mind a little. So I think it’s bad overall? Yes but that’s because of how easy it is to portal and change teams.
However, I can’t get back often enough to buy season tickets which is what I wanted to do. I chose NIL just in honor of my dad.
I just don’t think bashing for wanting to do either is productive.

Ummm… they ain’t gonna need that 529 after all these bball scholly offers.
Not to knock anyone, but if you put that travel ball $ in a 529 and let Jr play rec league, he'd still have great memories and college would be paid for and his choice of where to go. Wouldn't be trying to get a scholarship to play ball at North Central Georgia Tech College of West Southern University.

Yeah, Rocky, that's fine. Is your nephew at AU? Which sport?
I probably came off a little ragey in the thread, and I do apologize.
I was over on the PT that day for a bit and got in a pissy mood and then posted in this thread.
Politics makes me moody..

My brother was a good baseball player and didn’t get near a full ride at a 4 year school. Most baseball players don’t. He could hit 92 and had a slick curve and got a full ride at Juco and barely anything from 4 year schools. Depending on striking the genetic lottery for free school for the kids just isn’t smart.

He plays football for Utah and he puts in hours doing a events and photo shoots, does some social media videos and appearances. He’s married and the extra cash has really helped them.
Kind of made me be okay with them making some money and he puts in the work for the team and stays focused on what’s expected of him. He also has a very high grade average with honors, and working on his master’s degree. There are some things about NIL and portal that need to be looked at, but I was where you were on it at one time.
It’s all good bro.

Good advice on the 529. I got lucky. My oldest son got an ROTC scholly that paid about 50% at NC State. Would have been 100% if he could have stomached UNC or Duke but those schools didn't really offer the programs he wanted. My youngest bleed me out for 5 plus years of undergrad. But then he did a 6 year stint in the Army and got 2 graduate degrees with the GI bill. No debt for them plus a decent ride for them to get started. School debt and car debt are not good ways to build for the future. I know had them both myself.
Edit: and no funds to NIL for me.

That's not a bad sounding situation.
I guess my problem is the amount of money possibly involved. The initial answer to paying players was a stipend. Then it all of the sudden went to unlimited money from anywhere.
I would've had no problem with a stipend, and I really don't have a problem with the situation your nephew is in.
My problem is college athletes getting millions of dollars. I don't see how that can be good for the sport. It really dissolves that whole "student-athlete" image in my head.
Who was that college player that said, "We didn't come here to play school"?
Universities/colleges shouldn't be a minor league (in the truthful sense of that term) for athletes. Most of these kids aren't student-athletes. They're just athletes and shouldn't be in college wasting someone else's scholarship.
Not sure if that comes off as rational, but that's pretty much how I feel. Sports are more important than academics. Sports is not, and should not be, the primary goal of higher education. My interest in college sports is dwindling. This is a big reason why.

Auburn got 5 years of Out-of-State tuition out of me. They aren't getting anymore.

There is a key difference between this and what I believe we're talking about now. My understanding is the OTV just pools money and distributes it to players. If that's not correct then someone can tell me my understanding is way off.
Players getting contracts to promote businesses, products or events is different for me. Of course the best and more known players will get the bigger named businesses and thus get a bigger financial payment. The smaller businesses that can't afford the big money still have a path to participate by having less known players but yet still players on the team promote for them. And it also incentivizes the players to perform better because with better performance they get more attention and more attention equals better deals.
