That still doesn't explain why a kid turns down free college to play at AU. They are doing something to shrink the disadvantage.

I’m sure every case is different.
1.Focusing on in state talent avoids the sticker shock of out of state tuition.
2. I’m sure they do consider parents financial situation and ability to pay their own way as a data point during recruitment process. There will be certain players that are “can’t miss 1st round types,” and are worth giving nearly full ride. I think when you get into that next group of players, they prolly do have sliding scale based on analytics. For example:
-Player A grades out on our internal scouting system as a 7.5, but is from a family that can’t pay much towards cost of attendance.
-Player B grades out at a 7, but his family is able to almost all of the cost.
Maybe Butch opts for player B and can use that freed up scholly money on a different and or higher position of need.
I’ve got no idea if they do this, but It’s a necessity in current rule framework.
On a political tangent, I’m hoping AU’s run will put pressure on UA to be more apt to use baseball scholly issue in lottery bill debate and the bill’s design.

Coaching and relationships. Having to go further from home to find a kid that is getting overlooked.

How is Josh Donaldson in contention for a starting spot in the All-Star game when he's hitting .237?

Shame. He’d been fantastic to this point. Hopefully it’s just an arm fatigue issue.
I wouldn’t be too considered if he does have to go under the knife though. That hardly inhibits pitchers the first go around

I agree but they won't be. Baseball is a superstitious game.

I dont see a big deal with this. Didn't we just hire (or soon to hire) Eugene Lenti? He was a pretty well known guy.

Looks like Sonny Golloway was just hired at a HS.
