I mean Low vouching for him means nothing

After Arnett was taken off the table it appears we had 2 hires in 2 different directions... Kelly would mean a significant talent/recruiting upgrade and Roberts is purely an Xs and Os hire. We went with X&O. Based on how poorly Roberts performed with a young and inexperienced roster this year, we better get some good players from the portal on D.

How much was Robert's? Their offense was terrible.

The irony is Bama loves shitting on Golding, and Golding is supposed to be another validation of Robert’s work
Bama’s D is ranked 15 overall and their scoring D is ranked 9th. How many of us here would be grateful for a defense that good?

Bammers shite on Golding and every other coordinator because you absolutely, positively, cannot, under any circumstances, blame Nick Saban. The end.

Damn, I hate that for Leach and his family. Leach has been a treasure for college football.

I’m fine with an X’s and O’s guy. In fact earlier in this thread I preferred that over a recruiting guy.
But I’m looking at the results Roberts has had and it just doesn’t look that impressive.
Montgomery, I’d probably rather be a recruiter but not a big deal I don’t think. When you have a Head Coach that’s a recruiter and assistants that are recruiters, that’s all you need. Don’t really know how to feel about Montgomery. Had great offenses at Baylor but don’t know what happened at Tulsa.

I’m not backing Bama fans; I’m pointing out they eat their own just as much as we do. They hope both Golding and Clark are gone.
With that said, Bama being ranked 15th doesn’t mean shite to Bama and you know that. They had a top 3 defense for nearly a decade it seems.
2008 6th (in scoring defense)
2009 4th
2010 3rd
2011. 1st
2012 2nd
2013 4th
2014 5th
2015 2nd
2017 1st
2018 8th
2019 ( Golding starts) 15th
2020 13th
2021 17th
2022 15th

People were concerned the new hires can't recruit. This weekend has shown otherwise. Like you said, until it has been shown these weren't good hires, I'm going to assume a lifelong coach with past success knows more about hiring assistants than me, and far more about these guys than me. I'm assumimg they're good coaches until they show HERE they aren't
I am with you but I get the resistance to jump on board by some. Time will tell all.

That’s why my question was geared to us as Auburn fans.
Would we be happy with a defense ranked there and hell yes we would. frick the Bama fans. I didn’t even focus on them.

There are reports Bobo and Harsin got into it because Bobo called Harsin out on how he handled, or didn’t handle, recruiting.
This is 100% correct. In reference to a “here’s our plan for summer camps/visits” from Harsin, Bobo hit him with the “with all due respect…” in front of the entire staff.

Auburn has targeted former Baylor defensive coordinator Ron Roberts and is expected to beat out Arkansas for his services, sources told 247Sports on Sunday.
Roberts, 55, has risen through the ranks of college football, from Delta State to Louisiana and most recently at Baylor. He led the Bears to a top-10 finish in scoring as they finished the 2021 season as Big 12 champions with the program’s first New Year’s Six bowl victory under head coach Dave Aranda.
Roberts interviewed last week with Arkansas, Auburn and Georgia Tech, a person familiar with the process told 247Sports. The Razorbacks made Roberts their No. 1 priority in their search to replace coordinator Barry Odom late last week and coach Sam Pittman was convinced as late as Saturday they were on the cusp of hiring Roberts before Auburn coach Hugh Freeze was able to sway the playcaller to the Plains.
Roberts is among the highest-respected playcallers in the sport despite being fired Dec. 1 at Baylor. Roberts is known as “the godfather” of the recent proliferation of simulated pressures/blitzes in major college football. His schemes provide a safer avenue to fake blitzes while not losing coverage responsibilities. Roberts’ staff in 2013 at Southeastern Louisiana included future Alabama coordinator Pete Golding, future Seattle Seahawks secondary coach Karl Scott and future Florida co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney.
Aranda fired Roberts Dec. 1 after three years leading the Bears’ defense, which ranked 65th in scoring (26.6) this fall. Baylor was 10th in the country last season at 18.3 points per game.
Roberts, 55, was Aranda’s mentor at Delta State, where Roberts served as defensive coordinator for two seasons before he was elevated to head coach in 2007. He hired Aranda as his defensive coordinator. Roberts led Delta State for five seasons, which included four Gulf South Conference titles, four playoff appearances and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game in 2010.
Roberts, who also coached linebackers at Baylor, was hired away by Southeastern Louisiana before the 2012 season and went on to win the program’s first Southland Conference titles in 2013 and 2014 as the head coach. He moved on to Louisiana, his first job on the FBS level, to become Billy Napier’s defensive coordinator in 2018 before Aranda brought him to Waco in 2020.
“What was created during that time gave birth to many of the norms we see in modern college defenses
Stole this from Arky Board.

he is not a high profile name. If you really dig into what he has accomplished.......it's pretty impressive.
As others have said.....I want x's and O's guys for coordinators.

So what do we have left?
WRs? STs? Is Austin QB coach?

Sounds like Montgomery will coach QBs, Austin will be an analyst, Grant Heard as WR Coach (I believe the hold on his hire had to do with Freeze was looking at hiring a WR Coach as OC). I also think Christian Robinson coaches OLBs and ST, while Roberts coaches ILBs. They’ll probably a hire a ST quality control guy.
I believe when Robinson was a GA at Ole Miss, he worked with ST.

Someone made a decent point. Freeze definitely wasn’t hired so the boosters could pick their coaching staff. This has been all Freeze.

Which is refreshing if nothing else.

I had never heard of Roberts, but his resume is impressive (not sure how I've never heard of him). Arky and Ga Tech both wanted him.
I think it's a good hire.
