And his fellow co-DC can help with game management.
My issue with this is.. Kelly was a bad DC at FSU. McGriff was a bad DC at Ole Miss. So, both of our Co-DC's are both guys who have struggled with that job. Maybe working together helps take some stuff on their plate and allows them to be better.. but I get nervous depending on 2 guys to do a job they've already failed at.

People keep saying this and I have to admit I did not watch much of FSU from 2014-2017 so I can’t adamantly defend him but looking at the defensive stats those years:

Efficiency:
2014 - 42nd
2015 - 22nd
2016 - 12th
2017 - 18th

Scoring:
2014 - 50th
2015 - 9th
2016 - 45th
2017 - 29th

What was so bad about his defenses?

What was bad is his team out talented every team on the schedule and he put out average defenses in a weak conference.

But at the end of the day we need players. DL and LB roster is in a very bad spot. Same at OL and QB on the other side. Nothing is gonna look good until we get good players and depth. Harsin destroyed our roster

I mean 12th and 18th in efficiency isn’t average

At worst, I’d say he was an average DC if you use that argument of out talenting everyone

Look what he inherited… their defense under Pruitt (and to a lesser extent Stoops) was elite… Kelly took a well oiled machine and was mediocre… all while playing mediocre competition.

FSU fans are still traumatized by 3rd and Kelly. One of my close friends is an FSU fan and we we're in a lot of recruiting battles with them at the time, so we talked a lot of FSU football and I watched a lot of their games. They loved him as LB coach, but as a DC their team took a clear step back when you watched them play.

This explains it better. They regressed in pretty much every area under him and the trend shows he wasn't close to turning it around.

Yeah…. I went back and looked at the numbers… FSU was top 5 in total defense nationally the three years before Kelly… then had a dramatic drop in 2014 and never got back to that level.

In fairness, I’d be fine with Kelly as DC… but he was a significant step behind Pruitt and Stoops.

Hoke’s DC guess is Arnett, Kelly, Kiffin, or Mason.

Whatever that’s worth

Always count on Hoke

To throw several names out and then crosses fingers that it is one of those.

Which is funny.. because either him or KN just said yesterday that since they heard that first initial news about Freeze asking about Mason they haven't heard his name at all lol.

Mason was in town seeing one of our recruits.. its my guess he was asking about Mason to find out what he was recruiting against.
