Rest in peace, Coach Dye

1984 at Florida State. Most exhausting game I ever attended. If you looked at your watch you missed a big play.

Coach Dye quote:
-- will never forget, a 42-41 Auburn win over Florida State in one of the wildest games Dye ever coached.

"We couldn't stop them, and they couldn't stop us," Dye said. "We just had the ball last." video high lights

Sorry about that. I had some high blood pressure and my eyes were pretty blurry. LOL

I have read so so many stories on Coach Dye from coaches and players and and even fans, all of them have one thing in common...Dye's ability to have that God given gift of making you feel better about yourself. He lifted each person up he came into contact with. What a legacy.

One thing I do not agree with is Some saying including Paul Finebaum that Dye was our Bear Bryant.

My answer to that...No, he was not our Bear Bryant, he was our Coach Pat Dye. He stands on his own merit and legacy.

If any of you ever watched a hunting parady show out of Alabama called TK & Mike. Coach Dye was on there a few times and it was hilarious... Those two guys were way ahead of their time

All I know is I was a freshmen in 1982.

I saw Coach Dye walking toward me.

I did not try to high five, handshake, etc.

Coach Dye was serious business then.
He was a great coach and a tough man.

I remember seeing him and Coach Sonny Smith at some hotel bar in Opelika. Can’t think of the name.

I would not have survived a night of drinking with those two, but if a fight broke out- I would bet on Coach Dye back then.

RIP Coach Dye. You lifted Auburn up.

My future wife was in Tally with the AU band. I was chilling (or whatever we called back then) at our apartment listening to Jim Fyffe call the game on the radio when a buddy of mine from WEGL stopped by. Guy was never, ever into sports of any kind (strange, because both of his sons are scholarshipped track athletes now).

We drank a couple of beers and listened to the second half. It was a night game, so it had gotten pretty late. My friend, however, started getting more and more into the broadcast. When it finally ended he was on his feet. He looked at me with a happy grin and said, “Lets go roll Toomers!!”

It was literally the only time in his AU career that he did that. Helluva game.

I can’t keep blubbering every time I read another heart felt story about Coach Dye. Unbelievable character.
Read this one on his private burial from Jimmy Rane. It’ll get ya too.

I was born in 82 but remember the grown ups talking about that game once I was old enough to remember things. I imagine it was pretty similar to this year's Iron Bowl.

I’ll never forget talking with him from time to time in Beards Eaves during my undergraduate years and even before watching the AU Football review on Sunday with my grandfather back in the 80’s... precious memories... God speed Coach. I’m tearing up as I type this.

Another great article on Dye from Rodney Garner's own words:
such emotion. I hate it that he will not see that statue of him go up....:(

Being buried under a Toomer’s oak on his property, with just a shroud to fertilize his tree got my eyes watering.

I know. It's like it's a movie with a great story and a textbook ending.

It will be interesting to see how the 2 businesses he built up on his land will be taken care of for the future. I would assume with his age that he had someone pretty much managing all the day to day operations.

My son got to ride with him in his truck on his farm in the last year or two and he had some funny interactions with coach. He really is cherishing those minutes with Dye.
