We would be considered a multiple pro-spread team on offense. I remember back to Pat Dye and his DC Wayne Hall and we have always been a 4-3. Prior to that would have been what was called a 50 defense a 5 man front 3 line backers 2 corners and 1 safety. Also more called a Bear front from when the Chicago Bears used it in the 80’s but was a lot more flexible the standard 50 base.

We don’t deserve you Corch.

I only really remember as far back as Tubbs days on what Defense we ran and no I don't remember any huge changes. I could be wrong.
We have been base 4-3 for as long as I can really remember. I know under Bowden we had some odd names/positions for a couple of players (whip and rover) but I think those were still 4-3 at heart.

I know when Muschamp came in under Tubbs there was talk about him possibly wanting to move to a 3-4, and he was starting to recruit guys that would fit that scheme, but he never really put it in place before leaving.

Tubbs and Chiz were both 4-3 guys, so they had very strong influence over that during their tenures.

Also, I think a lot of SEC teams stayed away from the 3-4 once Saban got to Bama (and now with Kirby at UGA) because you are going to be recruiting head to head with them for the same players to fit that scheme. A little easier to go for a different scheme and recruit players that don't have a natural fit in Tuscaloosa or Athens.

Anyone else want to discuss defensive play calling now?

Would love to. What did y’all see today?

Can’t believe we don’t have a better safety than Puckett.

Ever consider that Mason is coaching at the level of talent he had at Vanderbilt and Stanford?

Mason’s coaching resume reads like “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.”

If he doesn't learn to send pressure on third and 8+, I am going to drive to Auburn just so I can kick him in the nuts. We sent pressure twice with them backed up to the goal line today. Great things happened on each play. We get them in third and 15 and he sends three at midfield. Brilliant!!

Exactly. Bringing pressure usually works out for the defense. Can we also talk about how Wooten still sucks arse? I hope Pappoe comes back soon.

Sometimes its the execution of the plays. On that TD they threw Puckett was in coverage and I saw in the game thread he caught grief. Go back and look at the play, the receiver slants inside on a skinny post, Puckett is behind him so he does not get beaten over the top because he knows he has safety help in front of the receiver

he has safety help....

he has safety help....

What was Knighten doing jogging down the field as if he was doing warm ups? You could see Puckett was pissed after the catch.

Then there was a rollout by Jefferson, he needs about 5 yards, he is rolling, there is one receiver in front of him, three Auburn defenders, in Zone, surrounding him and watching the eyes of the QB watching the eyes of the QB, watching the ball tossed to the receiver. It was so obvious where he was going to throw, certainly one could have made a jump on the ball for an interception, or at least knock it away, instead they look it into the receiver and then tackle.

My point is, I believe like Alpine that the defense would make a good roux about halfway through, but now Im not certain we have the brainpower to figure out a zone.
