Now? No.

They used to. I’m not even saying this as a complaint but with the current calendar, non playoff bowl games only hurt you

I’d rather be good enough to make one but I might decline it if it didn’t matter fiscally

Just like before. They only matter if you lose them. Its just like everything else

It becomes a issue when you lose.

I agree that winning a bowl game is the best outcome and that’s an argument for having them.

The next best outcome is being eligible and declining?

There’s just no benefit to losing one that I can think of. Used to, players would get some nice gear, maybe a watch or gift card. The NIL era kinda shits on that nicety

The recruiting calendar just fricks you so hard for participating

If SEC teams keeps losing them the conference probably won’t ever get three teams in the playoffs, so they could matter.

Pop-Tarts Bowl should be the CFP Championship game.

It gives the team some extra practice days. Winning a bowl game is good for morale.

Not really.

Of course it matters for practice and game experience for the young guys.

How much that impacts the next season? I say very, very little.

They don’t matter. Get rid of em.

There is just too much money involved (right now) for that to happen. I don’t think a condensed bowl operation or something like the NIT is a bad idea though

It is always fun to see Auburn play against a program that we dont typically play in regular season. It matters to me honestly. Its a xtra game to watch even when we suck like we have lately.

I’m not talking about winning and losing and the possible perception of adding a win or loss.

I’m asking do they matter?

Should they?

My opinion is that the players rarely care. Opt outs have destroyed bowls outside of the playoffs.

Is there benefit to extra practice? Possibly. However I think the extra weight room work might be greater benefit when you bring in 25 freshmen a year and get 15 in the portal that some won’t be there for those practices.

Does the conference consolidation make the unusual matchup less fun?

I thought about that this year against Oklahoma. Prior to this season, last time I watched auburn vs OU was in a small mountain bar after a blizzard. Now it’s another disappointing conference game

They have never mattered in the sense you are asking

Should they?

Absolutely it should. Have some pride in what you do

Some players it matters , some it doesnt. I dont know honeslty how to decide if they matter overall or not. If you ask Michigan right now, it surely matters,. If you ask Alabama, they will tell you it doesnt.

In todays world, Im not sure the extra practice matters. Imagine us getting extra practices right now. Wouldnt matter as much because half the guys here wont be starting next year. So to your point, the portal, revolving door make them insignificant

No, not a bit.

Used to be a way to see your team on TV and then to see a once in a blue moon out of conference matchup.

Players could go party, get swag and padded handshakes.

Playoffs will expand and the bowls will be history.

You know they're history when the bowls get together and pay for ads telling us how great they are.
