He probably just wants someone on his staff to succeed him. Retiring so late leaves the university little choice but to name someone on the staff coach. So he essentially gets to hand pick the guy

That was my initial thought as well, but then I learned he just signed an extension in June. That’s a bit strange.

Sounds like he was out on the NIL/transfer direction of today's game. I sorta get the leaving now vs end of season. Leaving now keeps the current players on the roster there and gives the staff time build those relationships (and recruiting ones) to hopefully keep them for next season? Leave at the end of the season and players (new & old) won't even wait around to see who the next coach is, they bolt for the portal.
