They also call too many damn fouls in the SEC. No way we could only play 7.
It's a completely different game (usually) in SEC play versus the tourney. So many dang whistles that it makes me question if I even like basketball. No one wants to see 50 free throws a game. That's why it's usually different in the tourney.

I somewhat agree. I like the big rotation and keeping the minutes down until March. That's the time we need to find our 7 or 8 best and roll them out.

I'm convinced the refs are instructed (or bribed) to give significant help to the home team in SEC play. It does make the game almost unwatchable, but it seems to be an understood arrangement among SEC coaches.

Could be a possibility with this roster. I could see it getting down to 8 with BP doing a lot more positional flexibility stuff than he has the past couple years.

Very little. I’m pretty opposed to that. It worked surprisingly well against UGA last year but that was 1 game against an overmatched team
I really like the idea tbh especially against teams who are just averge to below average shooting the 3. Thats 2 big dudes at the rim to score over on defense .

One of my biggest gripes with Pearl is he relies too much on his depth, and I’ve been saying this for years now, it’s why I believe we have flamed out in the tournament. There’s no cohesion for the starters when it comes to end of games because he’s constantly subbing people out. That’s good to do during the nonconference and first half of the SEC schedule. However, those last two months, your top 6-7 players need to be playing at least 27-30 minutes a game. Every other top program does that the last two months and it’s why they are consistently going to the second weekend in the tournament. Your main contributors need to have that chemistry and understand that they are the primary players instead of playing well and then getting subbed in, killing the momentum.
Depth has NEVER been a bad thing in team sports. It allows you to literally play any game you wanna play whatever way you want to play it.
You can play standard, you can play small and fast, you can play big and strong, you can play a shooting lineup, a pressing lineup, a 5-out lineup, an iso lineup. Depth provides so much versatility. It keeps teams from having any kind of advantage because you can counter anything.
And since there's no Shaq & Kobe in CBB, Auburn can literally match up with everyone. From Alabama to Houston to Duke to Kansas to Arkansas.

Again, I think people are not understanding my stance on the depth issue. Yes, depth is great to have, everyone knows that. It’s good to have players come in and not skip a beat and wear out opponents. That’s not what I’m discussing about though. I’m talking about, especially in basketball, how it affects your team chemistry late in games when you don’t have those top players used to being on the floor for a long period of time. Look at what happens to us in the past few years when it comes to our records in February and March. We struggle down the stretch, and my hunch is because we rely too much on depth and our top players lack the chemistry you need to win those big games down the stretch. There’s no reason Moore needed to play last year those last two months unless someone was in foul trouble or hurt. Same goes with Aden, he was a liability on offense and defense. But Pearl continues to disrupt many times the rhythm of our team chemistry just to build that depth. As I’ve said before, in basketball, you really only need 6/7, maybe 8, players down the stretch getting around 30 minutes of playing time each. It’s why you see time and again the best teams play only their best players unless emergencies arise in late February into March.

I understand exactly what you are saying, I just disagree.

I understand what he is saying as well. We did not have a whole lot of chemistry in the big tournament, but we did have chemistry during the conference tournament. If anything we fell flat against a buzzsaw, Yale.
Since we have a ton of pieces then Bruce has to know what those pieces mean to the team in all the different lineups and varieties of talent. Bruce is learning how those pieces fit now, but in-game management of those pieces are just as important. Some pieces need a straw to stir the drink. Some need to be the straw. I trust Bruce just as much as the rest of the guys, but Bruce wont be winning championships based on his starting 5. I believe it will have to be his mastery of our roster that gives us a sharp edge.

Yea, not going to sugarcoat this, losing to Yale was embarrassing and unacceptable, not because they were a 13 seed. That Yale team was mediocre at best for an Ivy League school. I watched alot of basketball last year, as usual, and they were probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the freaking IVY LEAGUE! That is what irritates me the most when I think about that game. I very rarely feel comfortable when it comes to the tournament and who you play in the opening round, but honestly, we got one of the easiest teams to play to start and we blew it. That game should have never been close, I don’t care CBM got ejected. That Yale team was pretty mediocre the whole year and got lucky to win their conference tournament to get in the first place. This wasn’t some great mid major who was underrated and coming in with ALOT of momentum. No, Yale was lucky to qualify for their tournament and they had some really bad losses throughout the season. There was a reason we were favored by double digits. I’m not trying to bash Pearl, but that was one of the most poorly coached games I’ve seen from him since he’s been here. I don’t care about the excuses some Auburn fans have made, we still should have won that game by double digits.

Yeah.
The game had the ingredients of us losing way before the final.

They made some tough shots for sure. First game of the tourney is always the hardest to win. CBM would have been guarding that Greek dude. Ref show.
It is what it is. We should have won regardless but that's the beauty of the tournament.

When some unknown starts hitting 26 ft fadeaway stepbacks over 2 people, it's gonna be a bad game...
Posted on 10/16/24 at 2:29 pm to thirdlawson
Yep! You could tell Bruce was really bothered by the flow of the game after the ejection.

I can agree it was a fluky game. I still think we should've won. I really just thought it was a funny use of the term buzzsaw

Yeah, I know probably not the best place to post this but it doesn't warrant a thread by itself...UVA coach Tony Bennett is retiring immediately?!? 15 year coach and you decide now is the time with the season right around the corner, something seems off.
