If I remember correctly, Sharife Cooper had the same intention, to go through combine and decide based on his draft grade... he was told late first which would mean a guaranteed contract. Then it didn't happen.

would be a tough spot to be in for Petty. imo he needs to come back and be a leader for the team and mature as a player

Shariffe's experience had to be less fun and fulfilljng. Lack of NIL as well.

This is my hope. With NIL we can and would pay more than what is slotted for a player in the 20-30 pick range of the 1st round

Hopefully so. Looks like it's between like 2.7 mil to 3.2 mil per year for a guy drafted in the 20-30 range.

My gut is that if the majority of projections have him somewhere around 27-30 or so, he probably comes back, unless he has basically been assured by a team in those spots that if he is there, guranteed they are picking him there. Just as easy to go 27 as it would be to go 35 or so, depending on how the rest of the draft works out.
This process has gone pretty well for him though.

The 5v5 starts today so that will be a big piece of it for him.

Agreed. If he balls out during the scrimmage, I think he will be gone.
