We don't need someone with full autonomy, I don't see Chip as a yes man

Very Gus type hire.. Gus will still be way too involved in the offense.

Lindsay checks off a lot of boxes... younger guy with strong ties to high school football in AL... reputation for QB development... experience with AU and Gus.

The question is can he challenge Malzahn in terms of scheme and play calling? If he can, this could be a really good hire. The talent is there for this offense to be very good.

I'm happy with this. Not a flashy hire, but solid. Gus needs to make his choices and sink or swim with them.

I think it would have been much worse if the PTB forced him to hire a coach whom he didn't see eye to eye with.

Gus is the HC. I want him making personal decisions even if it means failure. I am good with this hire. Mazzone would have made me quit.

Yep. If he fails it's on him. If he succeeds, it's on him.

ASU might be starting to hate us.

I don't know if we can win here. He has coasted with Rhett, a guy that would lick his grundle on command. He's not going to easily find one of those now with a reputation and he won't be allowed to hire one (Hand) without one.

If Gus hires a Chip or Sterlin, he's going to treat them like an apprentice, hand them his playbook and will be heavily involved in calling the same ole plays. He is extremely stubborn and has an ego (from reports), so I don't really know how much he'd even want to see someone else's playbook. It's fine when you're good, like Saban to his DCs. But it took him how many years to hand it all over to Rhett, a guy who played QB doing it? Did he even really hand it all over? The new OC will feel like a micromanaged puppet and will want to gtfo.

If we hire a veteran with experience, we either get a 'game has evolved beyond his system' guy with a decent bit not elite rep or a journeyman who hasn't really ever got it done. Now, we could get really lucky like we did with Steele, but he has his control; Gus doesn't know defense. We're not stealing anybody great laterally in our situation, not here. This person would not want an apprenticeship from Gus, would not put up with a significant amount of meddling hand-holding, and would only possibly be interested in blending their playbook with Gus'. Gus would not allow his system to be put on a shelf completely.

Kind of a conundrum. Maybe why it's taking awhile. The roots of the good ole boys PTB tree need to get fricked. Coaches don't have full control at most schools, there's a PTB entity. They usually care about academics but realize winning in football is very important for the university overall, realize when an AD sucks, and makes ample changes. Most of them however lack the prestige and football resources Auburn has.

But when the PTB is like ours, the environment becomes like Texas has but in our case without being the #1 school in the state. Nobody gets away with running a nationally competitive enterprise like Auburn PTB / Jay Jacobs anymore. Unless their priority is keeping full control where they don't care about winning or being elite, but just doing whatever it takes to create hype, trick the students and fans into spending money and buying tickets, all for as cheap as they can (like my buffalo bills do every year - stadium sold out) ensuring they stay secure and safe themselves. Then cover up mistakes with buy outs and spin the media however necessary to say the coach was blah blah - except when you do it enough times, people start to realize you're the problem. Though if they do nothing about it, keep buying the gear and going to games, you're golden.

If Crepea is making that source and article up for clicks, frick him. But with our track record where there's an almond smell, there's cyanide.

I'll wait to see the hire before I melt but I'm at 31 degrees and not confident. Maybe I need to Lanier: this is just what Auburn does.

Yup no excuses. It's his ship now float or sink. Would have liked someone with more experience but Lindsey isn't a bad hire. 3 years as a playcaller and has run an offense different than Gus so should have new ideas. Will be interesting to see what changes he will or won't make
