From what I've read it sounds like Gus wants Lindsey but is having trouble convincing the higher ups to pony up enough money to get him. He evidently has a decent sized buyout and the people with money as of yet aren't willing to pay what it would take.

It has nothing to do with money. He is being pushed to go outside his familiar group of guys as well as to hire a bigger/more proven name than Lindsay. Obviously if we are pursuing Helfrich (a guy who was just a HC who will demand a 7-figure salary) then a buyout for Chip Lindsay is pretty much nothing.

Money might not be the only reason but it is a major factor. These are direct quotes from Student22

quote:

I don't think the support and motivation exist to make the financial and contractual commitments it would require to bring in Chip Lindsey.  Just isn't enough confidence in him to move the needle it doesn't sound like to me.

quote:

Someone told me Gus would need to get extra money approved above his pool and that was not likely to happen for Lindsey.  I believe his buyout is significant for a non head coaching position.

quote:

He has a salary pool (that is quite significant btw).  If he need to go above that he has to get Jay on board to do that and the part of the BOT who has say over the contracts.  Was an easy sell to do that when we added Will and T-Rob.  Doesn't sound like it would be as easy if he needed to go that route to bring Lindsey in.

So to summarize 18 pages..

Art Briles - Out
Kendall Briles - Out
Helfrich - May have already interviews, May not be interested in OC position, May be #1 candidate
Jake Spavital - Headed to WVU OC
Chip Lindsey - Gus wants him but power brokers want Gus to hire from outside his tree. Lindsey is also making 550k/year
Eddie Gran - May or may not be a possibility
Eliah Drinkowits - If power prokers don't like Lindsey they probably don't like Drinkowitz
Tony Franklin - Hasn't been mentioned by the beat but i'm not ruling him out yet.
Sterling Gilbert - New name surfacing tonight
Brandon Streeter - Listed as a possibility by 247
Dameyune Craig - Listed as a possibility by 247
Jeff Scott - Name popped up somewhere
Herb Hand - Pls no
Tim Horton - Pls no
Ryan Aplin - Pls no

Read what he's actually saying. Money is only an issue because they don't really want Lindsey. He'd have to go well above his bonus pool to bring Helfrich in as well, but you can bet they'd line up to pay that money in an instant.

My main problem with hiring Helfrich is that he'd likely be one and done. He'd be the offensive version of Muschamp. This program is in desperate need of some stability.

For Helfrich to be one-and-done in a positive way, the offense would need to hit it out of the park in 2017. If that happens, momentum would probably get us the next greatest OC out there.

If Helfrich is one-and-done in a negative way, that means we shite the bed and everybody is gone anyway.

Helfrich isn't my top pick either, but I don't know that stability is foremost on everybody's mind right now. We perennially bet on JUCOs and transfers. That's just the reality of where the program is right now. To get Helfrich wouldn't be any different.

Of course none of us really know how this is really going down, but if Malzahn isn't allowed to hire the guy he really wants, and is being forced to work with a guy that the BOT/JJ picks, the chance of bad chemistry and sub-par season is high.

If Malzahn is really so stubborn that he doesn't realize his weaknesses, and the BOT/JJ are having to step in and manage his hires, it really doesn't matter who gets hired anyway. We are screwed.

According to JLee

Rhett was openly taking about wanting to leave and get out on his own since the beginning / middle of the season

Felt like to get serious HC chances he'd have to find success in his own right and not when Gus' underling

Um..how long was Rhett here? Stability didn't get us very far this season.

Everyone seems to forget how effective our offense had gotten before the injury bug. Gus has now replaced the OC or DC every season he's been here. That's not stability.

Wrong too. Has nothing to do with it. He didn't make Muschamp leave.

Also, Saban, with all his success has had 5 OC in 10 years. Didnt seem to hurt their program.

And in this case, most AU fans agree, that this is the best move for the offense So why is this a problem this time? Its not.

I don't think Rhett leaving is a horrible thing. I just don't want an OC that's going to bolt for a HC job after 1 season. The whole point of my comment was that Helfrich would most likely mirror the Muschamp hire. He'd put in a season, look pretty good and get hired away. This time next year, we'll be exactly where we are now.

Have a friend who is VERY connected to Oregon, who says Helfrich is horrible and never called a play that it was always Chip or Frost. This is probably sour grapes b/c the season they had, but I thought id share anyway.
