Jeff Grimes @ Baylor putting on a show. Good looking offense so far against a pretty salty Pokes defense

Get rid of Will Friend, hire Grimes as OC/OL and bring in Zak Hill as QBs coach

Why do I think the better Baylor looks today, the less likely it is we hire him?

Here’s a couple of reasons for optimism (which goes against my natural instincts as an AU fan):

Its been a given that if Bobo is was let go, Friend wouldn’t be here much longer. Perhaps Hars has been in conversations with Grimes about bringing him and Mateos (Baylor OL coach) in together, but didn’t want to be short 2 coaches heading into ESD so he kept Friend on staff until a deal could be worked out?

That would also tie into the delay in making one of the obvious moves (Hill from ASU or promoting Kiesau), as they would have to wait until after todays game to announce a move.

Not trying to get my hopes up, but Grimes/Mateos over Bobo/Friend would be a major upgrade IMHO.

In that situation, Harsin would do it himself I'd guess.

Here we go

Why would Grimes leave his current post to come to Auburn? Seems like he’s in prime position for a HC gig in the next couple of years. Does a 1-2 year stint at Auburn change that?

More money. Faster track to HC. But your point stands. He is from TX and that could be important

Top coordinators come to Auburn, they end up getting HC jobs. Now tell me how many coordinators have gotten HC jobs from Baylor? Auburn gives Grimes way more exposure than Baylor.

It could possibly set you up with a better potential HC gig coming from an SEC school. That being said, with the success they're having at Baylor and our current situation it might have become a lateral move, which is depressing to think about.

I think it does.

SEC is big boy football. Big12 is taking a huge step back with the imminent departure of its two most historically accomplished programs. A successful couple of years as OC at AU would certainly make Grimes more attractive to P5 programs than a couple of more years at Baylor.

That said, I doubt we get him, because his hiring sounds too perfect

Jeff Grimes checks every box we need.

Good coach. Check
Lights out recruiter. Check check
Familiar with the SEC and the south. Check.

I don’t feel like Harsin’s philosophy is as polarizing as Malzahn’s was, and he would be much easier to mesh with. With Malzahn it was hard to pull in a top notch OC because 1. He would not have autonomy and 2. Gus was notoriously stubborn.

It seems Harsin let Bobo do his thing as we saw a lot of the same stuff that frustrated UGA fans with Bobo’s play calling.

Make it happen Harsin.

There's no doubt Grimes is a grand slam hire if Harsin/Auburn is able to pull it off.

It is almost like these OCs are sitting there thinking “Damn I make a shitpile of money and need to come up with something sharp to prove I’m worth this money” instead of just pounding it up the gut

Yeah, I thought when Shapin lined up under center I figured they were just gonna pound it inside and live with the consequences.

Just like at SC, the decision to go for it + playcall has completely changed the tone of the game. Okie State has a real chance now.

Baylor will end up losing this game and it will be because of bad coaching
